Football News: Gareth Southgate names final England squad ahead of his World Cup selection
Gareth Southgate has revealed his last England team before the World Cup selection, which includes Eric Dier and Ivan Toney of Tottenham, but leaves out Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United
Before announcing his World Cup roster, Gareth Southgate will have one more look at his players in the next Nations League matches.
England manager Gareth Southgate has stated that Marcus Rashford is "still under consideration" despite not being included in the team for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany.
The 24-year-old Rashford has gotten off to an excellent start for Manchester United, scoring three goals in six games. Recent injury, though, has kept him out of United's Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol.
Despite Sancho's strong start to the season and Rashford's injury, he was not included in United's matchday squad to face Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday.
For the upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany, England has rewarded Toney's great start to the season following his impressive 12 goals in the Premier League last season and recalled Dier for the first time in almost two years.
Discussing his picks, Southgate stated, "Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration."
In addition, Gareth Southgate has discussed the decision to recall Eric Dier from his international exile with the England national team.
The 28-year-old, who last won one of his 45 caps in November 2020, is brought back into the fold because of his strong play for Tottenham and his "leadership" abilities.
Southgate's 28-man roster, which will hint towards his Qatar pick, also contains Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United, although Conor Gallagher of Chelsea does not.
What about Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips, Luke Shaw, and others?
Despite not seeing regular playing time with their clubs this season, Gareth Southgate thinks Ben Chilwell, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Kalvin Phillips can be valuable contributors for England.
Although Southgate acknowledges that the four players haven't been performing to expectations in recent games, he still thinks they've earned their spots in the team.
We've also got Harry Maguire, who's been taken out of the starting lineup by Ten Hag three times in the Premier League this season.
Because of Jordan Pickford's thigh injury, backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson, a Nottingham Forest loanee, will join Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope.
On Friday, September 23, San Siro, England, will take on Italy, and on Monday, September 26, Wembley, England, will host Germany.
England is in last place in Group A3 of the Nations League, and a loss would likely mean relegation.
When the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar begins on November 20, England will have played their last competitive matches. The next day, England will start their campaign against Iran.
