Football News: Friend and former teammate Luis Suarez defends Lionel Messi over leaked Barcelona terms
Luis Suarez has come to Lionel Messi's defence following the disclosure of the Argentine's contract demands at Barcelona
Two years ago, the Argentine superstar was in negotiations to extend his contract with the Catalan club before seeking to leave that summer.
He finally remained put before leaving the following year to sign a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
El Mundo released information about Messi's demands last month by publishing an email correspondence between the player's father and agent Jorge as well as Camp Nou officials of the highest rank.
Each party attempted to negotiate a new accord, but they were unable to do so, and the relationship eventually deteriorated.
Messi sought an £8.7 million signing bonus and a private aircraft to transport his family back to Argentina for Christmas as a condition for remaining with Barcelona following the disclosure.
He also requested a deluxe executive box for his family and the family of his former teammate Luis Suarez at the Nou Camp.
The Uruguayan has now supported his former teammate about the club's request for his family to share a box, stating that it is nothing out of the norm and beneficial to the club.
In an interview, Suarez stated, "It amuses me. It is something very normal in any player. If you check the contracts of any elite footballer, they should all have their box. I, for example, at Atletico Madrid, had mine; in Nacional, too.”
"That's why all this speculation amuses me. Actually, Leo's thing was to try to make life easier for the club because, being shared by our two families, it was just a box. It was more difficult for Barca if Suarez had one and Messi had another."
Barcelona has threatened legal action against the Spanish daily, claiming that the leaked information was part of an ongoing legal proceeding.
The leak has also angered Messi's camp, which has stated that it will prepare a lawsuit against El Mundo.
Emails between Jorge Messi, Lionel's father and representative, the 35-year-legal old's team, and Barcelona executives, notably then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, allegedly contained the information.
Luis Suarez opens up on Liverpool transfer
Luis Suarez has announced that he would not return to Europe, putting an end to any possibility of his returning to Liverpool.
The Reds were one of five clubs on the continent that he represented after moving from Uruguay as a youth.
Suarez spent three and a half years at Anfield, scoring 82 goals during that period. He then became a star with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and is currently back with his Uruguayan native club, Nacional.
After his contract with the Spanish capital expired, Suarez was free to choose his next destination, and there were rumours of a surprise return to Liverpool, the club he left in 2014.
The Reds are suffering this season, and a fresh injection would have been good, but the player has decided to end his European career.
