Football News: Despite his injury problems, Frenkie De Jong's contract with Barcelona may be adjusted
Frenkie de Jong has consented to negotiate a wage cut at the end of the year, putting an end to Manchester United's pursuit of the midfielder
A contract renewal signed by De Jong in October 2020 under then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu was at the centre of the argument. That was a matter of days before Bartomeu resigned as club president.
However, due to financial restrictions, his exorbitant pay impeded the club's ability to acquire other players such as Lewandowski and Raphinha.
Due to Bartomeu's impending resignation, Barcelona allegedly threatened legal action against the Dutchman, arguing that the contract should be void because the contract was signed in bad faith. They demanded the reinstatement of his prior contract.
According to a recent report from Catalan Radio, De Jong was willing to remain with the club, provided that the club would address his contract later.
The Holland international was among those who had to take a significant salary cut to remain at Barcelona and contribute to the team with the money that he paid in instalments.
The player's contract sparked international criticism as the club reportedly attempted to sell the midfielder to Manchester United and Chelsea.
The English clubs established transfer fee deals with Barcelona but they were unable to persuade the player to agree to the move.
Manchester United had even agreed to a deal with Barcelona to sign De Jong, but the transfer never occurred due to the player's desire to remain at the Nou Camp.
In the meantime, Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona's club, asked De Jong to reduce his wage to the team's new salary structure.
According to reports, the club will not sue De Jong. Instead, the technical secretariat and Laporta have agreed to reconsider his compensation readjustment, which undermines the scale they set this summer.
Ten Hag will likely have to wait until the conclusion of the season to be reunited with De Jong. Still, given Barcelona's ever-changing financial circumstances, a great deal could occur before the end of the year.
Frenkie De Jong has left for Barcelona after an injury
Due to the injury, Frenkie de Jong has joined Memphis Depay in departing the Netherlands national squad and returning to Barcelona.
In League A Group 4, Louis van Gaal included Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong in his starting eleven for the Netherlands' trip to Warsaw, where Cody Gakpo and Steven Bergwijn scored to give Netherlands a 2-0 victory.
The midfielder was substituted at halftime of Thursday's 2-0 victory over Poland. Still, coach Louis van Gaal stated that the move was precautionary and that he anticipated De Jong to be ready for Sunday's match against Belgium.
It currently appears that this is not the case, as De Jong has left the camp and is returning to his club.
In Memphis Depay's absence, Brian Brobbey and Ryan Gravenberch have been called up to the senior team, and Frenkie de Jong as Van Gaal's men attempt to qualify for the Nations League finals.
The severity of De Jong and Depay's injury is yet unknown, but both have surfaced as doubts for Barcelona's October 1 La Liga match against Mallorca.
