Football News: Erik Ten Hag warns of "attitude problems" with Alejandro Garnacho
Manchester United advanced to the round of 16 in the EFL Cup with a victory over Unai Emery's Aston Villa
Manchester United responded with goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford after Aston Villa took the lead twice in the second half. Manchester United took the information for the first time on a late deflected shot from Bruno Fernandes, and Scott McTominay added the fourth goal in the stoppage time.
Scott McTominay headed a Douglas Luiz corner off the line but had he not, Martin Dubravka was on hand to punch clear as the boring first half saw no action.
However, the second half was surprisingly dissimilar. Bruno Fernandes assisted Anthony Martial, who scored an equaliser 19 seconds after the restart.
Erik ten Hag immediately substituted after Aston Villa seized a 2-1 lead long before the hour mark, and Alejandro Garnacho, in particular, repaid the manager handsomely.
After 61 minutes of end-to-end excitement, Diogo Dalot scored his goal to put the visitors back ahead.
Marcus Rashford then celebrated his England World Cup call-up with his eighth goal of the season, scoring 67 minutes into the match.
Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Scott McTominay scored the fourth goal in stoppage time as Manchester United's dreams of lifting the trophy for the first time since 2017 remained alive.
The victory provides Erik ten Hag's squad with some measure of retribution for their 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. It sends them into Thursday's fourth-round Carabao Cup draw.
While illness or injury to Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Cristiano Ronaldo limited the available offensive options, Erik ten Hag revealed his intentions for English football's second-tier cup tournament by making seven changes from the weekend.
Erik ten Hag warns Alejandro Gernacho
The 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho provided two assists off the bench in Manchester United's 4-2 victory against Aston Villa on Thursday, helping to spark a second-half comeback to set up a fourth-round match against Burnley.
While the manager Erik ten Hag feels Alejandro Garnacho has the ability but warns the teen about his attitude.
"It was good that he came on and showed that performance and had that impact in the game, to be able to assist, make the dribbles and run behind," Erik ten Hag said. "He still has things to learn, but we are happy with his development, and he can contribute to the team."
"It depends on his approach, his attitude. When he keeps working then yes, it is possible [for him to play more]. He wants to improve every day. He has to do the right things in his lifestyle. He has the capability."
After Alejandro Garnacho scored his first senior goal in United's 1-0 win over Sociedad earlier this month, one of the team's vice-captains, Bruno Fernandes, commented on the teenager's demeanor during the preseason.
