Football News: Durand Cup 2022 - ATK Mohan Bagan beats Enami East Bengal 1-0
ATK Mohan Bagan won the Group B Durand Cup clash against Enami East Bengal 1-0 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, West Bengal, on August 28
ATK Mohan Bagan dominated throughout the match but failed to find the back of the net. Enami East Bengal forward Sumit Passi gave ATK Mohan Bagan after scoring an own goal in the 45th minute.
The coach of Enami East Bengal, Juan Ferrando, made five changes in the squad from their previous outing, with two of them due to Ankit Mukherjee and V.P. Suhair being injured.
The match started with both sides playing cautiously and testing each other’s defensive lines. Ashique Kuruniyan cruised past several Enami East Bengal defenders on the left flank in the 16th minute but failed to convert.
Liston Colaco got another opportunity to gain the lead for ATK Mohan Bagan, but his long-distance shot failed to find the back of the net.
Spanish defender Ivan Gonzalez took control of the ball and fired a powerful shot, forcing Mohan Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith into a dive.
The first half was close to ending without any goals scored. However, a corner by Liston Colaco in the second minute of the injury time bounced off Enami East Bengal goalkeeper Kamaljit and was accidentally deflected inside by Sumit Passi. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for ATK Mohan Bagan.
Enami East Bengal coach Stephan Constantine made three substitutes, replacing Angousana, Eliandro and Jerry with Aniket Jadhav, Cleiton Silva and Himanghsu Jangra.
Aniket Jadhav immediately got a golden opportunity to level the score, but his strike from inside the ATK Mohan Bagan box went off target. Just minutes later, Sumit Passi got a chance to head the ball into the goal but went off target.
ATK Mohan Bagan launched a counterattack, but goalkeeper Kamaljeet reacted on time to make an excellent save. Botch times got several opportunities to score but failed to find the elusive goal.
ATK Mohan Bagan now stands at the third spot in Group B with four points from three matches, while Enami East Bengal is in the fourth spot with two points from three games.
ATK Mohan Bagan will lock horns with the Indian Navy in their next Group B clash on August 31.
