Football News: Darwin Nunez apologises for the headbutt incident as Jurgen Klopp issues a statement
Darwin Nunez, a Liverpool striker, has apologised for his red card in Monday's Premier League tie with Crystal Palace at Anfield
The Uruguayan was awarded a straight red card after shoving his head into Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen in the second half of the team's 1-1 draw at Anfield on Monday night.
Nunez's red card means he will be suspended for Liverpool's next three games, including a critical meeting against Manchester United. Following Nunez's departure, the Reds were able to salvage a point thanks to Luis Diaz's fantastic equaliser.
He is the first Liverpool player to be sent out for violent behaviour under Klopp, and he will now serve a three-game suspension.
As a result of his red card, the Liverpool striker took to Twitter to speak with his supporters. "I am aware of the ugly attitude I had. I'm here to learn from my mistakes and it won't happen again."
Nunez will miss Liverpool's next away game against Manchester United and Premier League games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
Jurgen Klopp makes his opinion on Darwin Nunez
The Liverpool manager had intended to talk with the Uruguayan after his dismissal for violent conduct against Crystal Palace.
Jurgen Klopp has questioned people who assessed Darwin Nunez based on his first preseason performances.
Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica this summer for an initial fee of €75 million (£64 million), made his competitive debut last week, scoring and assisting off the bench against Fulham. He also scored in their Community Shield match against Manchester City.
The Uruguayan made his debut in a friendly against Manchester United, which Liverpool defeated 4-0. He passed up a significant opportunity, but the German argued it was inappropriate to criticise him based on that performance.
Klopp said on Nunez's performance: "Five weeks ago when we started preseason and he had his first game and it didn't look great from the outside world… Not for us, but it's crazy how quick we judge people… wow!"
"Everybody can now see, 'Ah he's a proper striker' — so good for us and good for him," Klopp mentioned. "You can't say, 'Come on, you have to give me 100 per cent immediately' — you have to develop it and that's what we're doing at the moment and in a good way."
