Football News: Bengaluru FC beats Mumbai City FC 2-1 to win the first Durand Cup title
Bengaluru FC won their first-ever Durand Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Mumbai City FC in the championship match at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, West Bengal, on September 18
Within the regulation time, Sivasakthi Narayanan in the 11th minute and Alan Costa in the 61st minute were the goalscorers for Bengaluru FC. In contrast, Lalengmawia Ralte, in the 30th minute, was the lone goal scorer for Odisha FC.
Mumbai City FC won a free kick in the very first minute of the game but failed to convert. Bengaluru FC soon discovered their rhythm and opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
Bengaluru FC defender Aleksander Jovanovic lifted a long ball toward Sivasakthi Narayanan. Mourtada Fall tried to intercept, but in the end, Sivasakthi Narayanan took control of the ball and chipped it over the Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa to make it 1-0.
Mumbai City FC got a golden opportunity to equalize the score in the 17th minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte took a shot from the edge of the penalty box, but Gurpreet saved it with ease.
Mumbai City FC finally equalized the score at the half-hour mark when Greg Stewart fired a powerful left-footed strike from a freekick. Gurpreet failed to take control of the low-level shot, allowing Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) to slide the rebound into the goal with an easy finish.
Bengaluru FC got close to regaining the lead in the 38th minute when Roy Krishna fired an excellent shot on a Roshan Naorem corner. However, Lallianzuala Chhangte rose to the occasion and pulled off a miraculous save. The first half ended with both sides tied 1-1.
Both squads began the second half with the same aggressive intent. Bengaluru FC finally got a breakthrough in the 61st minute after a period of intense competition.
Brazillian defender Alan Costa headed the ball into the Mumbai City FC goal on a Sunil Chhetri corner to seal the first-ever Durand Cup title victory for Bengaluru FC.
