Football News: £64 million Signing Darwin Nunez scores four for Liverpool
Even though it was just a pre-season friendly, Jurgen Klopp believes Darwin Nunez's four-goal performance against RB Leipzig will be extremely beneficial for his new striker
Nunez was closely watched for his first appearance against Manchester United in Bangkok. Still, he had a significant influence after coming on as a substitute, scoring four goals in the second half.
Four goals from Darwin Nunez in the second half gave Liverpool a 5-0 pre-season victory at RB Leipzig, a team from the top of the Bundesliga.
As Jurgen Klopp's team prepared for the 2022–23 Premier League season, Mo Salah's early goal at the Red Bull Arena rewarded them for their strong start.
Although the hosts showed signs of life before and after the break, replacement Nunez went on a rampage for the next 45 minutes to dispel any remaining doubts.
Following a penalty, the former Benfica hitman calmly finished twice inside the area before mercilessly burying Fabio Carvalho's ball to complete his four-goal tally.
Following several high-profile errors against Manchester United, the Liverpool boss dismissed criticism of Nunez and showed little anxiety over his team's defeat to United.
Nunez's self-assurance never seemed in danger of ebbing, and Klopp praised him for his ability to tune out the noise in a glowing post-game interview.
Jurgen Klopp opens up on Darwin Nunez's performance
Darwin Nunez, a recent addition to Liverpool, had a "perfect night," according to manager Jurgen Klopp, scoring four goals in the Reds' 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.
"We always think that if you pay a lot of money then the players feel no pressure or whatever," Klopp said after the brilliant performance. "They are all completely normal human beings and the first touch is not perfect then all of a sudden."
"This generation of players read social media, which is really not smart, but they do."
"All of a sudden you get in a rush and these kinds of things. That's the best way obviously to stop all these discussions. He's a different striker to what we have or what we had, but he's a really good one. That's of course a perfect night for him."
As a result of Nunez's missed opportunities against Manchester United and Crystal Palace, several fans dubbed him a "failure" on social media.
With a masterful performance against Leipzig, the Uruguayan has provided the perfect rebuttal to his detractors. His first goal for the Reds was scored from the penalty spot.
After being set up by Trent Alexander-Arnold for his second goal, the 23-year-old displayed superb poise to finish, and he added a third by deftly tapping in a cross from Harvey Elliott.
After that, though, Liverpool's new No. 9 wasn't finished as he added a fourth with a low curling strike in the 90th that once more had the Leipzig goalkeeper holding his head in his hands.
Liverpool will now focus on their upcoming friendly match on June 27 against Red Bull Salzburg.
Three days later, Liverpool will face Manchester City in the Community Shield final, while their 2022–23 Premier League season start against Fulham is set for August 6.
