In 2019, Granit Xhaka was stripped of his captaincy after clashing with his supporters during the Premier League against Crystal Palace
Subsequently, Granit Xhaka was close to leaving Arsenal after the incident, but manager Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay.
However, Granit Xhaka wore the armband again on September 18, leading Arsenal to a dominant 3-0 victory over Brentford. Martin Odegaard has replaced Granit Xhaka as the club captain, but the 23-year-old Norwegian midfielder was missing in the clash against Brentford.
Mikel Arteta placed his faith in Granit Xhaka by putting him in the leadership group. The 30-year-old Swiss midfielder proved himself worthy of the trust by starting the season with a dominant display.
Granit Xhaka performed excellently in the Premier League clash to help them secure a 3-1 victory over Tottenham. He calmly slotted the ball into the net to add the third goal for Arsenal after receiving a pass from Gabriel Martinelli.
Earlier this season, Mikel Arteta said, "His consistency. How he goes about every day, how he's learned through different moments in his career whether they are here or with the national team and his willingness over time to stay humble, look forward and try to get better and when you do that normally good things happen."
One of the significant strengths of Granit Xhaka, next to his attacking prowess, is his ability to progress the ball and availability. The trust placed in the Swiss national by manager Mikel Arteta has led to his consistency on the pitch.
Granit Xhaka has been giving some of the most impressive individual Premier League performances this season. He has been giving performances worthy of a top-four side and will be looking forward to displaying the same level of consistency for the rest of the season.
Not long ago, Granit Xhaka revealed the conversation with Mikel Arteta that made him stay. He said, "He (Arteta) is why I am still at this football club. All of the club knows why I am still here because three years ago, I was gone."
Mikel Arteta said, "Give me a chance for six months. Suppose you are still not happy after six months. I am the guy who will help you, not to run away, but you can leave."
Granit Xhaka agreed, and it worked out perfectly for everyone involved.
