Football feature: Manchester City players performances on international duty
17 first-team players in Manchester City played for their respective countries during September's international break. Out of the total 21 citizens spread around Europe, Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez flew to Africa and the United States, respectively
Here is an update on how Pep Guardiola's players fared internationally!
England: Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, John Stones, Kyle Walker
John Stones was suspended during England's match against Italy, but in the next game against Germany, the centre-back was benched due to a hamstring injury in the 37th minute.
Kyle Walker came in as the replacement, and Phil Foden attacked from the right side of a front three in both matches. Jack Grealish played in the final 20 minutes against Italy and was snubbed for the second match.
England has now been relegated to the second tier after their winless run over the last six matches.
Portugal: Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias
Centre-back Ruben Dias kept the Czech Republic from scoring during their Nations League encounter, where Portugal won 4-0. Bernardo Silva, with a game time of 67 minutes, performed on the right side of the front three.
Joao Cancelo made an appearance against Spain as a right-back. However, none of the players could help the squad finish at the top, and finally, Spain qualified for the Nations League semi-finals.
Belgium: Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne served more than 90 minutes each in Belgium's final two Nations League matches. The 30-year-old playmaker scored his 25th goal for the national team against Wales.
He opened the scoring in the 10th minute before providing an assist for Michy Batshuayi, who netted the second goal. However, he was helpless in the second match against the Netherlands, who scored a marginal 1-0 win to finish at the top of their group in the league stage.
Germany: Ilkay Gundogan
Ilkay Gundogan started in both Nations League fixtures, but the team finished third in League A Group three. He played for 69 minutes in the defeat against Hungary before his 90-minute-long appearance against England, where he scored a goal.
Norway: Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland couldn't deliver in the last two matches he played for his country against Slovenia and Serbia.
The 22-year-old netted the opening goal against Slovenia but was goalless against Serbia. Haaland has scored 21 times in 23 games for Norway across all competitions but couldn't cut in two of his three appearances against Serbia.
Netherlands: Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake dominated the back three and helped his team maintain a clean sheet in their 2-0 win against Poland. The 27-cap defender then started against Belgium before being benched before halftime.
Spain: Rodri
Rodri was kept as a substitute during Spain's loss home to Switzerland, as Sergio Busquets made the midfield cut. 26-year-old Rodri then secured his 34th international cap against Portugal.
He finished the game in Braga with two tackles, two interceptions, and three clearances.
Switzerland: Manuel Akanji
Manuel Akanji led Switzerland to a 2-1 victory over Spain. The centre-back scored a header in the 21st minute before registering an assist in the second half.
Akanji subsequently served a suspension during the second match against the Czech Republic. Switzerland then avoided relegation to League B, finishing five points ahead of the fourth-ranked Czech Republic.
Brazil: Ederson
Ederson remained absent from the pitch in Brazil's friendly victories over Ghana and Tunisia. The 29-year-old has only appeared in two of Brazil's last 14 internationals.
Argentina: Julian Alvarez
Julian Alvarez scored the opening goal during their match against Jamaica. The 22-year-old entered the game in the 79th minute before Lionel Messi scored a brace.
In the first game against Honduras, Alvarez walked halftime and played as a centre-forward.
Algeria: Riyad Mahrez
Riyad Mahrez scored the equaliser during their victory against Nigeria. The 31-year-old competed for 84 minutes and came off the bench in the 66th minute against Guinea.
Mahrez has 27 goals in 77 appearances to his credit for Algeria.
