Football feature: How will VAR decisions affect Premier League clubs in the 2022-23 season?
The Premier League has outraged sports fans and clubs due to the VAR's unjust and often fault rulings. The system reviews goals, penalties, direct red card situations, and cases of mistaken identity
However, it has had negative consequences for most clubs in the Premier League. The most scandalous cases revolving around VAR have affected West Ham and Newcastle, who were denied goals awarded by the on-field referee after an intervention by VAR.
As a result, the clubs' bosses have called for a review of such VAR decisions. Here are the most heated VAR decisions observed in the 2022-23 season of the Premier League!
West Ham's disallowed goal against Chelsea
West Ham was robbed of a 90th-minute equalizer by Maxwel Cornet against Chelsea, which could have tied the match that ended 2-1 in favour of Chelsea.
During the match dated September 3, the goal did not stand because Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have fouled the goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy in the build-up.
Referee Jarred Gillett was the one who was responsible for the verdict after the VAR sent him to oversee it. West Ham coach David Moyes said, "The goalkeeper comes to take it and actually fumbles it out of his hands five or six yards, so he could never recover it."
"Then he acted as if he had a shoulder injury. I'm amazed that VAR sent the referee to see it," he added. He deemed the VAR responsible as much as the referee but pointed out the level of weak refereeing at the moment.
Newcastle held to a draw because of VAR
Newcastle was held to a draw by Crystal Palace at St James' Park as Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell's own goal didn't stand after referee Michael Salisbury ruled it out.
He declared that the Newcastle midfielder, Joe Willock, fouled on goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, and the FC Magpies kept insisting that the goalkeeper pushed their midfielder, resulting in a 0-0 outcome.
The wrong verdict at Chelsea and Tottenham clash
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), Mike Riley disclosed that he didn't act against Cristian Romero for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair during Chelsea and Tottenham's match.
Former Premier League referee Howard Webb will replace Riley at the season's end. Football expert Alan Shearer said, "Mike Riley wasn't up to the job; they've got rid of him although he's still in it till Howard Webb comes in at Christmas time."
He believes that it is not VAR that threatens the integrity of football but the referees. Despite the statement, the fact that the VAR has failed to mitigate such errors makes it responsible.
Other clubs affected by VAR include Brentford, West Ham, Brighton, Arsenal, Everton, Wolves, and Nottingham Forest, all of whom have had goals disallowed by VAR, among other inconveniences.
