FIFA World Cup: France confirm Christopher Nkunku out for World Cup after injury
Christopher Nkunku has been ruled out from the FIFA World Cup 2022 after sustaining an injury during France's final training session before departing for Qatar
According to reports, Christopher Nkunku clashed with Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga, injuring his leg. Tuesday's practice saw Christopher Nkunku twist his leg awkwardly while competing with Eduardo Camavinga for the ball. The RB Leipzig attacker instantly communicated discomfort and left the training ground to undergo medical attention.
A video of the Real Madrid midfielder's tackle on Christopher Nkunku was uploaded on social media, leaving several France fans concerned for the star's health.
The World Cup commences in five days, with France's opening match against Australia on November 22 in Al Wakrah.
The RB Leipzig star, associated with a move to Chelsea in January, had already joined Didier Deschamps' team before the competition.
Initial reports indicated that he was hoping the injury wasn't serious, but additional scans have revealed different, and he will now miss France's defence of the World Cup.
A statement from the French FA read, "Injured in training, Christopher Nkunku must give up participating in the World Cup. The whole group shares Christopher's sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery."
Christopher Nkunku is the leading goalscorer for RB Leipzig
Christopher Nkunku is the Bundesliga's leading scorer this season, with 12 goals in 15 games and two assists.
He also contributed to Leipzig's Champions League qualification by scoring three goals in their last four games.
Four consecutive victories, including a 3-2 win over Real Madrid, allowed RB Leipzig to turn their European campaign around after dropping their first two group games.
According to reports, Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt will likely replace Christopher Nkunku in France's team. The 23-year-old two-time national team member has netted eight goals for Frankfurt this season and helped his former club Nantes win the Coupe de France in May.
France's first World Cup match will be against Australia on November 22, followed by games against Denmark and Tunisia.
And Christopher Nkunku's injury has only added to Didier Deschamps' misfortune.
Many of his regulars will be absent from the competition due to injuries. Key midfielders Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kante, and defender Presnel Kimpembe are absent.
Deschamps is particularly concerned about the health of Raphael Varane, who experienced a knee injury on October 22 and is still healing.
Due to their injury woes and the caliber of several nations, particularly Brazil, Argentina, and Germany, the defending champions will likely face a formidable obstacle in their quest to win consecutive crowns.
