Everton defeats Manchester United 1-0: Anthony Gordon strikes the winning goal.
Everton won against Manchester United 1-0 in a Premier League match at Goodison Park Stadium on April 9, 2022. It was a crucial win for Everton, who has been struggling near the bottom of the table this season.
Manchester United was extremely dominant over Everton from start to finish. They gave a lot of trouble to Everton's defence but failed to score a goal. They had 68% possession and better passing.
Anthony Gordon was the sole goal scorer of the match, with one goal scored in the 27th minute.
It was a challenging game between both squads. Both teams created quite a few opportunities but struggled to get past the defence. Manchester United managed to get a few breakthroughs during the first 20 minutes but failed to get past the Everton keeper Jonathan Pickford.
The 21-year-old English midfielder Anthony Gordon scored the first goal of the match for Everton, taking the score to 1-0. Gordon took possession from Nemanja Matic in the midfield and sent a through ball on the left wing towards Richarlison. The Brazilian forward then sent a cross that barely reached Gordon, who was waiting inside the box. Gordon wasted no time and fired a quick right-footed shot which went past David De Gea into the net after being deflected by United captain Harry Maguire.
Everton almost doubled their lead at the end of the first half with another deflected shot from Richarlison. However, David De Gea was able to make a fine save within a nick of time.
At the end of the first half, Everton defender, Joleon Lescott said, "When your luck is out, your luck is out," about Harry Maguire’s deflection.
Both teams failed to score in the second half. Everton emerged victorious at the end of regulation time, owing to their early lead. Ralf Rangnick’s squad had more possession, better pass accuracy and more shot. However, they failed to convert any of the opportunities into a goal.
Thanks to the victory, Everton moved four points away from the relegation zone, while Manchester United was left six points short of a Champions League spot.
