Europa League: Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho led the win over Real Sociedad
Cristiano Ronaldo praised Manchester United's fans following their 1-0 Europa League victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena in Spain on Thursday night
Alejandro Garnacho, who was given his second consecutive start in the competition, scored his first professional goal to seal the Reds' Group E victory.
On Thursday, the teenager scored his first professional goal in United's 1-0 Europa League triumph over Real Sociedad. Cristiano Ronaldo set himself up, and while celebrating with his teammates, Alejandro Garnacho was seen requesting Cristiano Ronaldo's permission to use his new 'sleep' celebration.
Christian Ronaldo originally celebrated in this manner after scoring his 700th goal in a club competition against Everton at Goodison Park.
The Manchester United star generally celebrates such a feat by performing his famous "Siuuu" routine, but he did not do so on Merseyside. Instead, he closed his eyes, leaned back, and stood with his fingers clasped to his breast.
Manchester United needed a two-goal victory in San Sebastian to supplant the Spanish club atop Group E and advance directly to the Europa League quarterfinals.
Manchester United, who won five of their six group games, must now negotiate a two-legged play-off against a third-placed Champions League club in February to advance to the round of 16. They might face a team like Barcelona or Juventus.
Manchester United are still in a solid position to reach their goals this season, as Cristiano Ronaldo secured his third consecutive start after being cut from the squad for the draw with Chelsea over two weeks ago.
After the win, Cristiano Ronaldo posted a message on his social media stating, "We move on and we keep going after our goals this season! Thanks to our supporters that never give up on us!"
What Erik Ten Hag made of the Cristiano Ronaldo starring match
Under Erik ten Hag's leadership, United had only one defeat in their previous 11 matches in all competitions, and that came in the derby against Manchester City earlier this month (6-3).
Erik Ten Hag was obviously very happy with the win and showered praise on Garnacho as well, "I am really happy with his performance: he was a threat, he scored a goal and did well defensively. It was a great finish, a great attack and really enjoyable," Erik Ten Hag said after the match.
"You do not always get what you deserve. In the first game there was a penalty that we didn't think was a penalty, but today we won."
"There are some positives: Garnacho, Donny back in the team. We scored a good goal, but unfortunately we didn't get the two we needed."
The Reds have three more games before the World Cup starts, beginning on Sunday against Aston Villa in the Premier League at Villa Park. Ten Hag's side then faces Villa again a few days later, this time in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.
Then, Erik Ten Hag's team will travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham less than 72 hours later.
