David Moyes wants more West Ham players to sign long-term deals after Jarrod Bowen bumper contract
David Moyes expects to tie more West Ham players to long-term contracts having handed Jarrod Bowen a bumper seven-year deal.
David Moyes expects to tie more West Ham players to long-term contracts having handed Jarrod Bowen a bumper seven-year deal.
England winger Bowen committed his future to West Ham until 2030 earlier this month, the longest contract in the history of the club.
Captain Kurt Zouma could follow suit soon, with the French defender about to enter the final 18 months of his current deal.
"When you're a bit of an old geezer like myself we used to see four or five years being the absolute tops," said Hammers boss Moyes.
"Maybe Chelsea started the fashion last season with the younger players signing really long contracts.
"Maybe now, because of the value of the players, a player who signs a four-year contract, maybe after two years you're having to renew or the player is looking to move and you’re having to sell him.
"Looking at it with those eyes, signing a player for much longer means you might not have to think about it for four or five years.
"We're planning to do that and it sounds like that's what Chelsea are trying to do with their players as well."
Moyes believes it is not only the clubs who benefit from protecting their assets.
"It's also a sense of security for the players," he added. "They can break their leg tomorrow or have an injury that keeps them out.
"Being secure as a footballer is important but I also think they want to be ambitious and keep doing well.
"Jarrod has a lot of faith in the club and what we're trying to do and go next. We've had a pretty good two or three years and Jarrod's very much been part of that, helping us grow.
"He's looking forward to it, as I am, to making it even better."
