Claudio Echeverri's Barcelona dream: A 'new Messi' in the making

In the thrilling world of football prospects, one name is on everyone's lips - Claudio Echeverri, the young Argentine playmaker, often hailed as 'the new Messi'.

    Claudio Echeverri. Claudio Echeverri.

His standout performance in the Under-17 World Cup has not only dazzled fans but also put Europe's football powerhouses on high alert. Despite strong links with Manchester City in recent weeks, Echeverri, at just 17, has openly expressed his desire to don the iconic Barcelona jersey.

Echeverri, already a fixture in River Plate's first team at his tender age, is drawing keen interest from several European clubs, each eyeing him for their future success.

In a pre-Under-17 World Cup interview, according to Pol Nieto Novell of SPORT, Echeverri revealed his fondness for Barcelona, citing his admiration for Lionel Messi. "Apart from River, I would love to play for Barcelona. I've been a Messi fan since my early years, watching him play for Barcelona has always held a special place in my heart."

Despite the Premier League giants, including Manchester City, PSG, and Real Madrid, expressing interest in the young talent, 'Radio la Red' reports suggest that Barcelona have taken a proactive approach.

The Catalan club have allegedly communicated its intention to River Plate, expressing a willingness to surpass the player's release clause (€25million) with an increased offer (around €30million). Barcelona, in a strategic move, are even open to spreading the payment across multiple instalments.

Echeverri is under contract with River Plate until December 31, 2024. Yet, the prospect of him staying with the Argentine outfit until then seems highly unlikely.

While financial muscle often tilts the scales in favour of clubs like Manchester City, PSG, or Real Madrid, Barcelona seem to hold a unique advantage in the pursuit of the 'new Messi'.

Echeverri's ardent desire to wear the Blaugrana colours give Barcelona a compelling edge in the race for his signature.
