Chelsea legend & ex-Arsenal winger Willian returns to London with Fulham FC signing
Willian, formerly of both Chelsea and Arsenal, has joined Fulham on a free transfer.Willian, 34, left Brazilian team Corinthians at the end of last season after his contract ended and is now under contract for a single year
Willian departed Chelsea for Arsenal in 2020, but the move and his subsequent return to Brazil with Corinthians were both disasters for him, leading to a never-ending stream of online harassment against him and his family.
The 34-year-old player consequently opted to terminate his contract and return to England.
Willian helped Chelsea to a hat trick of Premier League championships and the FA Cup and Europa League. The hope for Marco Silva's side is that the Brazilian's expertise can be a game changer as they try to stay above the relegation zone.
He has a wealth of Premier League championship experience from his seven years at Chelsea and will be a valuable asset to the team.
Upon his arrival, Willian told Fulham, "I'm happy to be here; I'm so glad to be back in the Premier League.
"Fulham is a special club, a club that wants to improve, that wants to fight for something bigger, so I'm here to help, and I can't wait to get started."
On September 3 against Tottenham, Willian might make his Fulham debut. His former teams' fans will root for him to have a strong game against one of their biggest rivals.
Due mainly to the goals of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fulham has gotten off to a decent start in their return to the Premier League. The team is hopeful that Willian's extensive experience will help them further cement their position this season.
Willian is presently tied for 26th place all-time with Gordon Durie on Chelsea's all-time goalscoring list with 63 and is 29th on the list of all-time appearances with 339.
Who else has Fulham signed?
After Nice loaned Joe Bryan to Fulham, the club announced today that Layvin Kurzawa has arrived on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, bringing Fulham's total number of summer acquisitions to 11.
Carlos Vinicius, formerly of Tottenham, has joined Marcos Silva's squad after being acquired from Benfica for £9.5 million.
The 27-year-old has agreed to play with the team for three years with an additional year available.
But on transfer deadline day, Fulham lost backup goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who went on loan to Spanish club Girona for the upcoming season.
In the past, Silva has expressed a desire for more players, suggesting he did not feel he had a strong enough roster to compete in the Premier League.
However, the West Londoners have gotten off to a great start and are now in 7th place after only five games played.
The Welsh winger Dan James of Leeds is still an option for a loan move.
Even though Fulham had their initial £6 million offer for Ben Brereton Diaz rejected by Blackburn Rovers, the club still has the option to come back with a higher offer.
