Champions League: Tottenham Hotspur beat Marseille and top the group table
Tottenham Hotspur overcame a one-goal deficit to win Group D of the UEFA Champions League, while Marseille was eliminated from European competition
Tuesday's 2-1 victory at the Stade Velodrome earned Tottenham Hotspur a spot in the Champions League's round of 16 after surviving a scare in Marseille.
Spurs, whose coach Antonio Conte was barred from the touchline, were dominated in the first half and conceded a goal to Chancel Mbemba in stoppage time.
Hugo Lloris produced excellent stops to deny Alexis Sanchez and Jordan Veretout, but Chancel Mbemba's powerful header gave Marseille the lead late in the first half.
Clement Lenglet equalized for the visitors in the 54th minute despite the loss of Son Heung-Min to a head injury early in the first half.
With ten minutes remaining, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg burst away and scored a goal.
Tottenham topped the group ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting Lisbon thanks to this result and Eintracht Frankfurt's victory over Sporting Lisbon. Marseille finished in fourth place.
Tottenham provide an update on Son Heung-min's eye injury
The South Korean athlete appeared stunned and bewildered after receiving a blow to the head during an aerial confrontation. He was appropriately substituted in the first half but needed assistance walking down the tunnel.
With the World Cup only 17 days away, the focus will shift from reports on his fitness for his club to his availability for his country when South Korea's World Cup campaign begins on November 24 against Uruguay.
After receiving a solid blow to the left side of his cheekbone, he required extensive treatment on his back.
Then, when he gently rose to his feet, visibly disturbed, swelling formed on his face.
The injury occurred as Son Heung-Min, and Chancel Mbemba competed for an aerial ball. Chancel Mbemba collided with him and made contact with his shoulder as well.
Antonio Conte's deputy, Cristian Stellini, was in charge as Antonio Conte was forced to watch from the stands following his red card last week.
He said about the injury, "We have to check on him tomorrow but Son felt better in the dressing room after the game and he was able to celebrate. We're not sure if it is a concussion yet. It was an injury to his face, his eye is swollen."
Due to the protocols surrounding such injuries, the Spurs star might still miss Sunday's match against Liverpool at Anfield.
In the interim, Son Heung-Min was able to celebrate his team's late victory, which clinched a position in the round of 16, with photographs of the team celebrating in the locker room released on social media.
