Champions League: Mohamed Salah comments on Jurgen Klopp's line-up change after Liverpool's win over Napoli
Despite defeating group leaders Napoli 2-0 in their final group game, Liverpool had to settle for second place in the group and a spot in the knockout round of the Champions League
Mohamed Salah and Jurgen Klopp spoke after the Anfield match about their pride in the result and optimism that it will serve as a springboard for their team to improve its recent form.
Mohamed Salah scored from close range in the 85th minute, and Darwin Nunez added a late goal to give Jurgen Klopp's team a vital victory following their 2-1 loss to Leeds at the weekend. However, Liverpool failed to beat Napoli by four or more goals, which was required to win the group.
Mohamed Salah and Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez scored late goals to earn the victory for Liverpool at Anfield, following VAR delays both times.
However, due to their massive loss in Naples during the group stage, the Reds finished second behind the Serie A toppers.
Liverpool needed a boost after losing their previous two Premier League games against Nottingham Forest and Leeds United. Mohamed Salah told the reporters after the game that he hoped the victory would deliver it.
Mohamed Salah's goal tied him with Steven Gerrard for the most goals scored for Liverpool in European play with 41.
"Anyone can score, the most important thing is the team winning. As a striker, I like to score. Darwin likes to score. We did both," Mohamed Salah said.
"I think it's important. This win today will give us more confidence, especially because we played a good game with the ball, without the ball. We tried to recover the ball quickly. As you can see, in the league we're not doing great, but hopefully, we can give ourselves a little push. We just need to win more games in the league."
Jurgen Klopp made four substitutions from the team that lost at Anfield, but there were few opportunities in the first half, with Thiago's shot, Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret saved standing out.
Leo Ostigard appeared to give Napoli the lead in the 53rd minute when he headed in a free-kick from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but the goal was deemed offside following a VAR review.
Alex Meret's mishandling of Nunez's header from a corner kick allowed Mohamed Salah to score the game-winning goal late in the match.
Then, Nunez scored the winning goal in stoppage time on the rebound of Virgil van Dijk's thunderous header, with the goal being deemed onside after a lengthy review.
Mohamed Salah on Jurgen Klopp reverting to the 4-3-3 formation
After playing a 4-4-2 diamond formation recently, Mohamed Salah confessed he loved returning to the formation he is so accustomed.
"It's not my job, it's the gaffer's job," Salah responded when asked about the 4-3-3 formation. "Yes," he responded when asked whether it was more comfortable.
"Any position makes me comfortable. I'm happy about it. I've played the position for five or six years, so I have to say yes that position is the best for me. But I'm not the manager – the manager decides the tactics and as a player, you have to follow the leader."
