Champions League: Liverpool F.C. VS Rangers F.C.: Mohamed Salah makes history at Ibrox: Reds beat Rangers 7-1
Liverpool defeated Rangers 7-1 on the road on Champions League elimination night, with Mohamed Salah coming off the bench to score the fastest hat trick in Champions League history
Mohamed Salah, who scored a hat trick, left Ibrox with the match ball signed by his Liverpool teammates.
Mohamed Salah's hat-trick in six minutes, along with goals from Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Roberto Firmino's brace, enabled the Reds to rebound from Scott Arfield's goal and clinch their third consecutive European victory.
Earlier in the evening, Liverpool's Group A rivals Napoli advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Eredivisie winners Ajax 4-2 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Rangers took the early lead as Liverpool struggled to get going, and Liverpool fell further behind when Arfield scored from the edge of the box in the 17th minute to silence Ibrox.
Roberto Firmino responded immediately with a well-placed header and added a second just before the hour mark.
Then, in the 66th minute, the Brazilian's flick enabled Darwin Nunez to score his second goal in many games with a precise finish past Allan McGregor.
Salah replaced Nunez at the 68-minute mark and scored a hat trick in only six and twelve seconds between his first and third goals.
Liverpool's victory was clinched by Harvey Elliott's seventh-minute goal in the 87th minute.
Liverpool is now second in Group A and needs just one point from their final two games to secure a spot in the knockout round.
Rangers suffered their biggest defeat in a competitive match at Ibrox due to Liverpool's brilliant second half.
Rangers boss Giovanni Van Bronckhorst was devastated after the humiliating loss, "The first half and the last half-an-hour was night and day, how we played and that difference in level, that is too much in Champions League. I cannot explain it right now."
Liverpool F.C's boss Jurgen Klopp was impressed by Liverpool's efforts
"We were really just on it and meeting us in the wrong moment is not cool [for opponents]," Klopp said after the match. "All the goals we scored were exceptional. Mo [Salah] came on and is on fire and interprets the position really well. It is a night where things work out for us."
"In the end, we needed to get clear in the final third, which obviously worked out, all the goals were great, how we played them and set them up and finished them."
Rangers cannot finish in the top two of Group A and advance to the knockout round as they stay pointless. The team of Giovanni van Bronckhorst can still qualify for the Europa League if they finish third and surpass Ajax.
After Napoli defeated Ajax 4-2 earlier in the evening, Liverpool needed just one point from their final two games against Ajax and Napoli to qualify. Rangers are in last place after four consecutive losses and cannot advance to the knockout round.
This was a timely boost for Jurgen Klopp's squad, which will face Manchester City on Sunday.
