Champions League: Chelsea make history after victory at San Siro despite controversial Fikayo Tomori decision
Chelsea defeated AC Milan 2-0 at the San Siro thanks to goals from Jorginho and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following Fikayo Tomori's dismissal
After last week's 3-0 loss at Stamford Bridge, AC Milan played Chelsea at the San Siro and made a pretty strong start to the match.
As a result of a controversial refereeing decision, Chelsea was handed a considerably easier night in Milan than they perhaps anticipated.
Former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori was sent off in the 18th minute for tugging down Mason Mount when he was through on goal. The referee granted a penalty kick and issued a red card to Tomori, ignoring the double jeopardy rule.
Tomori was shown a red card barely 18 minutes into Milan's Champions League match against Chelsea for denying a goal-scoring opportunity by tugging Mason Mount's shirt. Milan's head coach was astonished.
Tomori's straight red card against his former employers followed a poor performance in the first leg, but the judgment has raised concerns, as Mount could still shoot at the goal and remain on his feet.
The red dished out to Fikayo Tomori against Chelsea prompted Stefano Pioli to inquire if VAR was in effect.
He revealed, "I just asked the referee whether VAR was working properly. I don't believe it was the referee's best evening tonight, that is without a doubt."
As a result of Fikayo Tomori's early dismissal for conceding a penalty, Milan was severely hampered, and Jorginho converted the ensuing penalty kick for Chelsea to seal the victory.
Soon after, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his strong form by extending Chelsea's lead, securing his team's fourth consecutive victory and continuing their unbeaten start under Potter's management.
The striker, who has scored three goals in his last three games, exchanged passes with Mount before finishing with precision past Ciprian Tatarusanu.
Chelsea suffered a setback in the second half when Reece James was forced off with an injury shortly after the hour mark.
James, who has been a peripheral character for Chelsea this season, went down for the second time and had to be replaced, adding to England's injury concerns ahead of next month's World Cup.
Graham Potter reacts to another Chelsea win under his leadership
"To come here and win is not easy," Potter expressed himself. "Credit to the players. They were perfect."
"We had a bit of luck with the opposition going down to 10 men. It's nice for the penalty and nice for Jorginho to score. It was a nice move to lead to it. It is what it is. Sometimes they go for you. Overall the performance was good."
The club's first Champions League away victory over their Italian opponents in 19 years propels them to the top of Group E with consecutive wins against Milan. Next time, a victory against Red Bull Salzburg would be enough to go to the knockout stages.
