Oliver Kahn: Bayern Munich replaced Julian Nagelsmann with Thomas Tuchel due to dip in form
Bayern Munich announced Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach, replacing Julian Nagelsmann on Friday.
The decision was made due to Bayern's dip in form and a lack of consistency since the World Cup, according to former Bayern goalkeeper and current CEO, Oliver Kahn.
"After the World Cup, we have played less successfully and less attractively," Kahn said in a statement on the club's website. "The big fluctuations in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season, but also our goals for the future. That is why we have acted now."
Bayern had two of their three league defeats this season in their last five games, which has seen them lose their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to Borussia Dortmund. Despite a successful Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain, Nagelsmann has paid the price for a dip in domestic form.
"When we signed Julian Nagelsmann for FC Bayern in the summer of 2021, we were convinced we would work with him on a long-term basis," Kahn added. "Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad has come to the fore less and less often."
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic also expressed regret about the decision to part ways with Nagelsmann. "I have had an open, trusting, friendly relationship with Julian from day one," he said. "But after a thorough analysis of the sporting development of our team, we have now decided to release him."
Nagelsmann was appointed as Bayern's head coach in July 2021, but his tenure has been short-lived. The club have now turned to Tuchel, who previously managed Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. He has been appointed on a contract until June 2025.
The decision to replace Nagelsmann with Tuchel will come as a surprise to many, but Bayern will hope it pays off in the long run as they look to regain their dominance in German football.
