Borussia Monchengladbach confirm departure of Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram

In August 2019, Bensebaïni, 27, signed a four-year deal with Gladbach for €8million, becoming the most expensive Algerian defender at the time when he moved from French side Rennes. Thuram, 25, joined Gladbach in July 2019 on a four-year deal, with the transfer fee paid to Guingamp reported to be €12 million.

"We had an open exchange with both players and knew the current status. It's a shame that they won't be renewing their expiring contracts because both have given us a lot in the last four years. And we also understand that our fans are disappointed that they won't be staying," said Virkus in an interview on the club's website.

"But it has always been part of our strategy in recent years to bring in such talented players, develop them, and eventually let them go because we can't keep them forever. Ideally, these transfers generate an attractive transfer fee.

"Of course, it's not ideal that this is not the case now. But they are both players who can make a difference. Both of them have helped us in the past and are still contributing today. That's why, despite all the legitimate disappointment, they deserve a proper send-off," Virkus added, citing the club's strategy and the impact of the departing players.

The announcement of Bensebaini and Thuram's departure comes hot on the heels of the recent revelation that the club's captain, Lars Stindl, will also be leaving this summer.
