Bayer Leverkusen lands a solid solution in Patrick Pentz
Bayer Leverkusen has secured the transfer of Austrian international goalkeeper Patrick Pentz from Stade Reims.
The 26-year-old has signed a new contract with the German club, which will keep him at the Werkself through 2025.
With back-up keeper Andrey Lunev currently dealing with herniated disc issues, Pentz is expected to step into the role of second-choice net-minder behind Lukas Hradecky.
"We had to find a solid solution for this important position," said B04 sporting director Simon Rolfes. "Andrey's timely return to our squad is unclear. We have found this solution with Patrick Pentz.
"We are grateful to have had the opportunity to get an ambitious keeper at a high level at short notice, with whom we will be well positioned in the future."
Pentz is excited to join the Bundesliga club and prove his abilities at a top-four team. "As an Austrian, the Bundesliga is of course of great appeal to me," said Pentz. "Many of my countrymen play here. And with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, I now have the chance to prove my abilities at a top-four club.
"I will do my part and work hard to ensure that we continue on the path we have chosen and achieve our goals for the season," he added.
The former Stade Reims keeper spent nine seasons with Austria Wien and has been capped four times at the senior level for Austria.
Leverkusen reportedly convinced Pentz to join the club instead of moving to America's MLS by promising a future role in a successful club closer to home. The fee paid to Stade Reims for the transfer has not yet been released.
