Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland is close to completing the move to Manchester City
Erling Haaland has declared that he will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano revealed that the club is ready to activate the striker's €75m release clause, so the footballer is expected to make the transfer later this week
Reports suggest that Haaland completed a medical at Hospital Erasme in Brussels on Monday. The striker has informed Borussia Dortmund about his exit with a release clause worth €75million.
It demands Haaland's transfer fee be paid in one payment, unlike several transfers that proceed in instalments. The Norwegian international has created a wave in Bundesliga, becoming Borussia Dortmund's talisman since his debut in 2020. Other details for the move are expected to be disclosed later this week. He has scored 85 goals in 88 matches for Dortmund since joining RB Salzburg in January 2020. His last game is their upcoming home match against Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
Liverpool boss Klopp expects "new levels" in the transfer market.
Pep Guardiola's side has shown utmost dedication in its efforts to sign the 21-year-old, but the amount mentioned in the clause turned out to be below market value. When Guardiola was asked about the club's rumoured interest in the Norway striker last month, Guardiola gave a curt response stating he was not concerned about the next season at that moment in time. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp thinks that the Haaland deal will impact the transfer market. He said, "If Erling Haaland goes there, it will not weaken them. I think there's enough spoken about this transfer. I know there is a lot of talks out there about money, but this transfer will set new levels; let me say it like this."
Does the City need a new striker?
This season, the City has played their matches without a key striker after retiring club-record goalscorer Sergio Aguero towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign. When asked about the arrival of a potential replacement, Guardiola said that they already have good strikers lined up for the season, and he is not concerned about the following season. Furthermore, the deal offered to Haaland by Manchester City will include a five-year signing that will cost them over £200million once wages and fees are taken into account.
The striker has conveyed his plan to Dortmund as he is gearing up to leave this summer. The Manchester City Chief Executive Ferran Soriano told Borussia Dortmund last week that City is looking forward to paying his release clause. It is said that the Bundesliga team are interested in signing Red Bull Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi as Haaland's replacement. The 20-year-old has a record of 23 goals in 42 games this season while also adding eight assists.
