Benzema scores big as Real Madrid defeats Chelsea

    Real Madrid won against Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final match at Stamford Bridge on April 7. Both  squads will lock horns again in the return leg of the quarter-final, to be played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on April 13.

    Even though the current Champions League titleholder, Chelsea FC, had a better opening during the first quarter of the match and took more shots. It was Real Madrid who scored the maiden goal of the game.

    Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick for Real Madrid with three goals in the 21st, 24th and 46th minutes, while Kai Havertz, in the 49th minute, was the sole goal scorer for Chelsea FC

    Vinicius Junior sent a stellar cross into the penalty box in the 21st minute toward Benzema, who smashed a header past Edouard Mandy into the top corner of the goal giving Madrid a 1-0 lead.

    Just three minutes later, Karim Benzema doubled the lead with another gorgeous header from Luka Modrich’s long pinpoint pass over Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to widen the lead by two goals.With just five minutes left in the first half, Kai Havertz scored the first goal for Madrid with a brilliant header on a delightful cross from Jorginho. The first half ended with Chelsea trailing past Madrid 2-1.

    Karim Benzema took advantage of a blunder in Chelsea's wall of defense, allowing him to take a clear shot into a wide-open net just one minute into the second half. It was a brilliant start to the second half for Real Madrid as Karim Benzema was able to complete his hat trick. Real Madrid tried to narrow the lead and took a few shots but failed to convert them. The second half ended with a 3-1 Real Madrid victory over Chelsea FC.

    Karim Benzema expressed his satisfaction with his performance after the match. He said, "They're very important goals. I'm happiest to have scored the third as I missed one in the first half and I was thinking about that chance because it's very important to score goals. Then I got another and I'm very happy." Chelsea had more possession and pass accuracy than Madrid. They took 20 shots compared to eight by Real Madrid and received more corners but failed to convert all but one opportunity into goals.

    Thanks to three goals scored in the match, Karim Benzema is now the second-highest scorer across all competitions for the season with 35 goals, just behind Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 45. He also broke his old record of being the oldest player to score a UCL hat trick at 31 years and 108 days.
