Benfica shunted out of the Champions League by Liverpool

    After last week’s 3-1 victory over Benfica at Estadio da Luz, Liverpool tied against Benfica 3-3 in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

    Ibrahima Konate in the 21st minute and Roberto Fermino in the 55th and 65th minute were the goal scorers for Liverpool, while Goncalo Ramos in the 32nd minute, Roman Yaremchuk in the 73rd minute and Darwin Nunez in the 81st minute scored for Benfica. Liverpool was extremely dominant over Benfica, winning 3-1 In the first leg. However, Benfica fought back in the second leg, giving a much better performance.

    Liverpool controlled 67% of the ball, took almost three times more shots than Villareal and had better pass accuracy. However, Villareal attacked well, beating the Liverpool defence to score thrice.

    Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 21st minute for the second week in a row. He powered a header past Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos into the bottom corner of the net on a pass from Konstantinos Tsimikas. In the 31st minute, Goncalo Ramos leveled the score with a low shot in the bottom left corner past Alisson Becker. The first half ended with both the squads tied 1-1.

    Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool the lead again with a close-range shot on a pass from Diogo Jota. He doubled the lead a few minutes later as he sneaked past the Benfica defence and volleyed home on a free kick from Konstantinos Tsimikas. Giving Liverpool a 3-1 lead in the match and a 6-2 aggregate lead. Benfica fought back and tied the scores again with two back to back goals from Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez.

    The match ended with an aggregate 6-4 victory for Liverpool, setting the stage for the semifinal against Villareal on April 28.
