Barcelona livid as 20000 frankfurt fans dominate Nou Camp
Barcelona was left fuming during their Europa League quarter-final match after their home stadium Nou Camp was reportedly taken over by 20,000 Eintracht Frankfurt fans.
Their Europa League journey ended with a 3-2 defeat against their German opponents.
Coach of Barcelona Xavi said, “What is clear is that it is an error, a calculation error, a planning error. It is very clear that playing at home, this can’t happen to us.
He added, “I thank the Barcelona fans who have cone and encouraged their team a lot; it’s a pity that we can’t give them victory and qualification for the semi-finals.
“It’s a miscalculation; the club is looking at it. Let’s see what happened. The squad also wants an explanation. Let’s see what happened.”
Later, the president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta said, “We are worried about the fact that today a big shame happened which can’t happen again. We have a large part of the information at hand about what happened. We need time to process this and we will take the appropriate measures but it’s shameful what happened.”
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo said, “I’m surprised there are so many German fans in the stadium. The club will have to look at that.”
Barcelona had been having an excellent run in La Liga with their revived form and are not standing at the second spot on the tables, 12 points behind Real Madrid. Xavi tried to play down their embarrassing 3-2 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt at their home stadium, ending their Europa League title journey.
Even though Barcelona controlled 75% of the ball, Eintracht Frankfurt got an early lead with a goal from Filip Kostic in the fourth minute. Rafael Santos Borré doubled their lead in the 36th minute with a long-range shot into the top left corner of the net. The Serbian midfielder Filip Kostic scored again in the 67th minute, taking the lead to 3-0.
Sergio Busquets and Memphis Depay scored for Barcelona in the added time, but the match ended with a 4-3 aggregate win for Eintracht Frankfurt.
