Barcelona FC to change Camp Nou name after a new sponsorship deal with Spotify
La Liga icons Barcelona FC will partner with Spotify as they take over as the club's main sponsor. The announcement was made on March 22, 2022, and the deal gives naming rights of Camp Nou for the very first time.
It will also entail Barca's men's and women's teams wearing the music streaming service's logo for the next four years, and renaming the club's legendary stadium to Spotify Camp Nou.
Why Did Barca Partner With Spotify?
The Blaugranas were struck by financial problems in the 2021-22 season. So the club cracked a long-term sponsorship deal with the audio-streaming company to mitigate the monetary discomfort. Barca's board, led by President Joan Laporta, are battling a €1.35billion debt. Laporta said, "We are very proud to announce a pioneering alliance like this with a world-renowned organization like Spotify.”
Laporta continued, "This partnership will allow us to continue to bring the club closer to its fans and make them feel, even more, part of the Barca family through unique experiences, combining two activities such as entertainment and football, making it possible for us to connect with new audiences around the world."
In December 2021, he declared that the club was looking to sell Camp Nou's naming rights to initiate funds. However, the chief executive officer Ferran Reverter resigned because of his opposition to the deal. Now, it needs to be approved by delegate members in April, although the board of directors has already said yes.
What Does the Deal Include?
Spotify's partnership with Barcelona involves the company sponsoring the team jerseys and receiving title rights for the stadium. Sources suggest that the deal could be worth €280million ($307m). Meanwhile, Barcelona's existing sponsorship deal with the Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten which started in 2017, will end this summer. We can expect Barcelona's training kits to bear the Spotify logo for the next three years. Since 2018, they have been sponsored by Beko in a deal that was reportedly worth around €57million ($62million) in total.
