Atlético Madrid vs Granada ends in a goalless tie

Atlético Madrid tied against Granada 0-0 in a La Liga match at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain. Atlético Madrid missed the golden opportunity to gain a three-point lead over Barcelona and Sevilla at the second spot against low ranked Granada.

Atlético Madrid dominated Granada on the field, taking 22 shots compared to seven by Granada, but failed to convert any of the opportunities. In the end, both the squads went away with one point each. It was the second disappointing performance in a row after losing to Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals last week.

The absence of Portuguese striker Joao Felix and French midfielder Thomas Lemar proved disastrous for Atlético Madrid. Both the players will most likely be unable to play for the rest of the season due to muscle injuries.

Atlético Madrid got close to finding a breakthrough in the added time but failed to break the dreadlock as Matheus Cunha after gaining control of an exceptional pass had his shot deflected by the left side of the goalpost.

After the tie, Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul said, "We are very angry and frustrated. We tried until the end, but things never went our way. We know that it was important to win to finish the season in second place. Now we will have to try to rescue the points in the coming weeks.

Atlético Madrid has moved to the second spot on the La Liga rankings, followed by the tie in a half-filled stadium on a rainy Wednesday in Madrid. The club trails chart leaders Real Madrid by 14 points and has a one-point lead Barcelona at third and Sevilla at the fourth spot.

The Madrid based club must finish the season in the second spot if they desire to make it to the Spanish Super Cup, to be held in Saudi Arabia in January 2023, as only the top two teams in La Liga will be able to qualify.
