Aston Villa defeats Burnley 3-1, deepens relegation worries for Burnley
Aston Villa secured three points in their 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley. Aston Villa has now picked up seven points from their last three games, two wins, and one draw
Burnley is now tied with Leeds United at the 16th spot with 34 points. However, Leeds United has four games left to play compared to Burnley's three. Burnley worked hard, defeating Wolves, Watford, and Southampton to ease their relegation worries in their last three matches before faltering against Aston Villa.
Danny Ings in the seventh minute, Emi Buendía in the 31st minute, and Ollie Watkins in the 52nd minute were the goal scorers for Aston Villa, while Maxwell Cornet in the first minute of the added time was the sole goal scorer for Burnley.
In the seventh minute, Aston Villa got an early lead when Danny Ings could sneak past Burnley's defence to receive a through ball from Emi Buendía. The English forward shot the ball past Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope to score against his former club. In the 31st minute, Emi Buendia doubled the lead for Aston Vila when Ollie Watkins passed the ball to left-back Lucas Digne, who slid the ball to Emi Buendía. The Argentine midfielder sent the ball into the net with a slight deflection from Burnley F.C. defender James Tarkowski.
Burnley was only able to get a few opportunities but could not use them. In contrast, Aston Villa was ruthless with their attack and converted their chances. The first half ended with a 2-0 lead for Aston Villa.
Villa got their third goal seven minutes into the second half when John McGinn sent a brilliant cross from the left-wing towards Ollie Watkins, who headed the ball into the net, giving Aston Villa a 3-0 lead.
Burnley launched a counter-attack in the first minute of the added time when dutch defender Erik Pieters passed the ball to Maxwel Cornet, who went round the keeper and slid the ball into the empty net, scoring a consolation goal for The Clarets. The match ended with Aston Villa emerging victorious 3-1 over Burnley.
Aston Villa will next face Liverpool at Villa Park on May 11.
