The team was backed up by strong players on both offence and defence. However, a few players stood out and drove the team to success. Here is a list of the top five Indian footballers during the qualifiers.

    Suresh Singh Wangjam

Suresh, widely known as a midfielder in Bengaluru FC, displayed a mature performance despite being just 21 years old. His infectious energy pushed Igor Stimac's side ahead and increased their momentum. Suresh could shield the two central defenders and intercept strikes made by the opponent. He is fast-paced with his transitions and is not someone to budge regardless of how capable the opponent is.

    Jeakson Singh

Jeakson plays alongside Suresh Singh Wangjam in the centre of midfield, forming a double-pivot in front of the defence. He had similar responsibilities in Kerala Blasters FC during ISL 2021-22. His tall frame was handy for the Indian side whenever they attempted to recycle possession and stop the opponent from progressing into the Indian half of the pitch. Jeakson's critical moment in the qualifiers arrived in their last match when he threw an assist to Sunil Chhetri. The skipper then scored India's second goal against Hong Kong.

    Anwar Ali

21-year-old Anwar Ali tapped into his hidden potential and scored for India during their last qualifying match against Hong Kong. The young FC Goa defender is known for his composure independent of the ball alongside his ball progression skills, particularly the long diagonals. He did not have a memorable campaign with his club side FC Goa, and his deteriorating heart condition almost coaxed him into quitting the game. However, he made a strong comeback and forged a strong partnership with Sandesh Jhingan as they secured two clean sheets in the qualifiers and bagged the top spot in their group.

    Ashique Kuruniyan

Ashique Kuruniyan primarily operates as a left-winger but also exhibits the skills of a left-back. He played both roles satisfactorily in Bengaluru FC and had a remarkable campaign for the Indian team in the qualifiers. The winger watched out for the opposition at the back and worked well with Akash Mishra in sabotaging the opponent's defensive strategies, most notably Afghanistan and Hong Kong. He delivered an assist against the Afghans by setting up Sahal Abdul Samad for the late winner in India's second match at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.

    Sunil Chhetri

The Indian national team captain Sunil Chhetri stole the show at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers. He scored four goals, one coming from a direct free-kick against Afghanistan. The skipper sustained an injury and returned to the pitch after six months. The 37-year-old led the charge and adhered to all the tactical strategies employed by head coach Igor Stimac. Despite being 37 years old, Sunil Chhetri plays with exuberance and impressive consistency.
