Football News: Leeds United and Newcastle won to progress to the next round
Leeds United beat Salford City 3-0, with Mateusz Klich scoring twice. Newcastle United narrowly won 2-1 against League Two Tranmere Rovers, while Brighton & Hove Albion and Bristol City also progressed with wins
This was a game of two halves. In the first, Newcastle was on the front foot, putting pressure on Rovers. It looked heading for a draw until Rovers got a lucky goal against the run of play. However, Jamaal Lascelles equalised before the break, and Newcastle took the lead in the second half. Chris Wood scored from a Kieran Trippier corner, and Howe's side held on for the win.
Leeds joined the next round of teams after defeating Barnsley 3-1 in a heated match at Elland Road. Luis Sinisterra put the hosts ahead with a superb strike and then won a penalty for Mateusz Klich to double the lead. But Barnsley fought back, with Mads Andersen pulling one back with a diving header. Visitors were denied an equaliser when Callum Styles' penalty hit the post. Tempers flared in the second half, but Klich's second goal before the hour wrapped up the win for Leeds.
The third top-flight team in action on Wednesday, Brighton, eased through with a 3-0 win at League One Forest Green.
Deniz Undav and Steve Alzate scored late in the first half to put the Seagulls in control, and Evan Ferguson added a third in the 90th minute.
Kane Wilson and Antoine Semenyo scored late as Championship Bristol City claimed a 3-1 win over League One Wycombe at Adams Park.
Ali Al-Hamadi cancelled Dylan Kadji's early effort, Wilson turned the tie back in their favour in the 77th minute, and Semenyo sealed it in stoppage time.
