FIFA World Cup: Casemiro's 83rd-minute goal secures Brazil a place in the round of 16
Casemiro's winning goal sent Brazil to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they secured a 1-0 win over Switzerland at Stadium 974 on Monday
Brazil adopted a different strategy after Neymar Jr.'s injury departure during their opening win against Serbia, and the stars aligned in their favour. However, the Selecao needed veteran midfielder Casemiro to guide them instead of a star-studded frontline that includes Vinicius Junior, Richarlison, and Raphinha.
Switzerland managed to minimise Brazil's attack, but in the 60th minute, the latter turned the tide around. They have now joined France in the last 16.
In the starting minutes, Brazil failed to capitalise on their wide offensive approach, but the second half brought in more opportunities. Vinicius Jr. almost took the lead for Brazil after a small Swiss defensive error allowed for a neat finish.
However, the VAR called it off with an offside verdict against Richarlison.
Brazil edged ahead through Casemiro, who converted Rodrygos's half-volley and led the Selecao farther in their pursuit of World Cup triumph after two decades.
Why Casemiro is vital to Brazil's campaign in Qatar
Defensive midfielder Casemiro, at the heart of Brazil's defence, is responsible for making things easier for the other players, much like Gilberto Silva in 2002.
He made his debut in 2011 and has remained a mainstay in the Selecao midfield since 2016. His role as a holding midfielder for an attack-minded team like Brazil demands skill and patience.
Besides being a tough player, he has to tackle the opposition and know when to bring in a challenge. He is in control of the pace and direction being at the centre of midfield.
Casemiro's presence is impactful even when he doesn't have the ball. He never vacated his spot in their opening Group G win against Serbia.
He could've dashed forward in a game that allowed him more possession, but he only handled the ball in the final third of the field.
Brazil was 2-0 up with 12 minutes remaining, and his shot struck the bar. He was disciplined, alert and reliable throughout the match, something Brazil needs for a successful campaign.
Neymar Jr. could make an early return in the knockout stage
Neymar Jr. shared a positive update about his injury through a post that hinted at his rapid recovery. Neymar Jr. sustained an ankle injury in the final 10 minutes of Brazil's World Cup opener against Serbia.
After the match, he promised he'd return and support his country. The Brazilian posted a picture showing reduced swelling on his ankle.
The PSG star could return to the field as early as the first round of 16 matches. However, some reports have also suggested he could lend a hand during the Selecao's last group encounter against Cameroon on Friday.
Now that Brazil have sealed a spot in the next round, fans can take a step back to relax and wait for Neymar Jr. to come back.
