Hockey News: CWG 2022-High hope for Indian men's and women's hockey teams
Despite hockey being one of the most popular sports in India, India has failed to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games
Though India has been one of the most prosperous nations in hockey in the Olympics, CWG hasn't been very lucky for the country.
Hockey was introduced in the commonwealth games in 1998, and Australia has been the most successful in the field. India did reach the finals on two occasions: in 2010 and 2014; however, it failed to bring gold back home.
This year, the men's and women's hockey teams are all set to prove their competence in hockey in the soon-to-begin Commonwealth Games.
The commonwealth games are to begin on July 28 this month and are being hosted in Birmingham.
Experts believe that Indian hockey teams have not succeeded in the CWG because they are held very close to the Asian Games and Olympics every year.
Because Asian Games are the qualifying event for the subsequent Olympics, it is more important for the teams to focus on the continental events to qualify for the Olympics.
The focus on these significant continental events diverts their focus from the commonwealth games, and they cannot succeed at the tournament.
This year's postponement of the Asian Games has allowed India to send its best teams for the commonwealth games. Unlike when India used to send its second-best squad for CWG, India is sending the strongest squads for the tournament this year.
The men's hockey team is solid this year, with Manpreet Singh leading the team. Harmanpreet Singh, PR Sreejesh, Amit Rohidas, Surinder Kumar, Mandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh, with many young talents like Hardik Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad, Gurjant Singh and Lalit Upadhyay are some of the best players of India.
With a strong team like this, the men's team has a strong chance of claiming the gold this season.
Meanwhile, the Indian women's hockey team will be led by Savita Punia in the upcoming commonwealth games. The team didn't do well in the World Cup, finishing in the ninth position.
Given the team's recent performance, the women's team must be filled with the determination to bag a medal in the CWG starting on July 28.
With an incredible forward, Vandhana Katariya and Gurjit Kaur leading the defense, the women's hockey team expects this year to be their lucky.
Their last gold was in 2002, and their previous silver was in 2006. Ever since the team hasn't bagged any medals in the event, it remains to be how the two teams perform in one of the year's biggest tournaments.
