Hockey India names a 20 member squad for Hero Men's Asia Cup

    Hockey India has recently named the squad that will compete in the Asia Cup in the men's category. The Cup is scheduled to be held between May 23 to June 1. The team will be coached by the two-time Olympic champion: Sardar Singh

    At the same time, Rupinder Pal Singh, who had obtained a bronze in the Olympics, was selected as the team's Captain. For the position of Vice-Captain, Birendra Lakra was selected. 

    Out of the 20 members who have been selected for the Cup, ten are making their debut in the national team. These ten new faces for the final squad, part of the FIH Junior World Cup's hockey team, are Vishnukant Singh, Yashdeep Siwach, Manjeet, Uttam Singh, Abhishek Lakra, S Karthi, Pawan Rajbhar, Sheshe Gowda BM, Abharan Sudev, and Mareeswaren Sakthivel. 

    Pankaj Kumar Rajak and Suraj Karkera are the goalkeepers of the squad. Raj Kumar Pal, Mareeswaren Sakthivel, Vishnukant Singh, Simranjeet Singh and Sheshe Gowda BM will be holding the midfield position. Rupinder Pal Singh, Abhishek Lakrab, Dipsan Tirkey, Yashdeep Siwach, and Birendra Lakra are the defenders, and Abharan Sudev, Uttam Singh, Pawan Rajbhar, S.Karthik and SV Sunil will be holding the forward position. Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Maninder Singh are the replacement players, and Pardeep Singh, Pawan, Angad Bir Singh and Ankit Pal will standby. 

    Sardar Singh, the former Captain and the current coach of the team being asked about the team's talent, said, "This is a very talented group of players, and I have seen them work hard over the past few weeks to earn a place in the team. This will be my first tournament as India coach on a personal front, and I am looking forward to his new experience."

    Coach BJ Kariappa also appreciated the talent of the team. He said that the ten players making their international debut this year, coupled with the rest of the experienced and senior players, make a perfect blend of the talent required to excel in this tournament. He also said that the current team for the Asia Cup would help them test the new team in an international game since the country has qualified for the FIH World Cup. The Asia Cup would serve as an excellent opportunity to decide the squad for the World Cup.
