Sony's State of Play broadcast on June 2 to showcase new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 titles
Sony fans have been discussing for weeks when the next State of Play event would take place and what it would look like
Because it makes the most sense, all rumours pointed towards the State of Play in June. Sony's next showcase was only a matter of time as several other events were already planned for the next month, like Summer Game Fest and the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase.
Finally, Sony has now announced a Summer State of Play broadcast scheduled for Thursday, June 2. It will showcase upcoming PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation 5 games.
The PlayStation Blog says it will include 30 minutes of announcements and updates and will be streamed live on YouTube and Twitch starting at 3 pm Pacific/11 pm UK / 6 pm Eastern.
There will be reveals from Sony's third-party partners, and a "sneak peek at several PlayStation VR2 games in development". Considering the content of this broadcast, it doesn't seem like PlayStation's first-party exclusives will be a big deal.
As an aside, Sony recently distinguished between its State of Play broadcasts, which are usually shorter and focus on a specific theme and its PlayStation Showcase event.
Sony's event will serve as an unofficial inauguration of the summer games announcement season, during which developers including Microsoft, Nintendo, Ubisoft, and Square Enix will announce their upcoming titles.
These announcements were usually made at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles for the video game industry. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to be held online last year. Game companies are now planning their own announcements and not following the E3 schedule.
Sony waited until September last year to present its full showcase. It included the first gameplay of God of War: Ragnarok, teasers of Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 & Wolverine games and a Knights of the Old Republic remake, along with many other features.
Sony Playstation announcements to expect
Some of the PlayStation games we expect to be showcased include God of War: Ragnarok. It is currently scheduled for release sometime in 2022. However, recent signs indicate that it will soon be released.
Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida promised a fresh look sometime in the spring. It may even have a release date and a host of other details.
According to recent rumours, the game could be released this year. But Square Enix has kept a trailer back for some reason.
It makes sense to have a stage, and there isn't a better one. This fits well into Square Enix's promise of more Final Fantasy 16 news.
Also, a peek at third-party games that have shown up at past PlayStation Showcase and State of Play streams, like cyberpunk cat adventure Stray and Little Devil Inside.
While it is not clear what the third-party games will be, there are still some Hogwarts Legacy fans who want to hear more.
Currently, It is scheduled to be released later in the year. However, fans will learn a lot about many games at the next month's events.
As for VR games, Only a handful of VR games have been confirmed so far for PSVR2, including Horizon: Call of the Mountain, the spinoff, Among Us VR and Cyan Worlds' Firmament, as well as unnamed projects from Coatsink, Jurassic World Aftermath, and nDreams' Fracked.
Although it is not clear if Sony will show gameplay or mention these games, it is evident that the company is willing to shift its focus more toward the headset's software.
