League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, which allows users to play with in-game characters called ‘champions’. These champions are the most crucial element of the game and choosing the right one can make or break your chances of success.

A play Leagueer of the game, especially a beginner, might find it really difficult to succeed in the game if they don't know how to pick the champion that is best suited to their style of gameplay. A gamer may wish to play more aggressively or defensively. They might be a strategist or someone who barges into the battlefront like a berserker. Hence, it is of utmost importance for gamers to know which champion is most appropriate for their style.

League of Legends has more than 100 champions to choose from. The champions could be fighters, marksmen, tanks, supports, mages, and assassins. Therefore, for beginners to get it right, there are many things to consider.

What are champions in League of Legends?

As mentioned above, champions are characters in the game that players control.

Most MOBA games do not have as rich a collection of characters as League of Legends has, which boasts 159 champions as of 2021. Each champion in League has a different skill set and ability.

This ability is known as an ‘ultimate’ in LoL and can only be used occasionally by players as it has a custom cooldown time. Champions can be divided into categories and classes, although you might not find success in classifying some of them.

How to pick the perfect champion in League of Legends?

The most popular map of League of Legends, Summoner’s Rift, is a challenging format. Not only does a player have to take care of their surroundings as they defend themselves from monsters but they also have to fend off the opposing team too.

The champions shine here with their abilities, skills that are suited to the three particular areas in the game - the lanes, the jungles, and the river.

In a ranked game, there are five champions on each team and each of them has a special purpose in battle. Some take the role of an attack-soaking tank, whereas others might prefer to go after the opposite team as a silent marksman. League has special built-in champions for that purpose, those who serve their missions with specialties. Hence, you need to recognise your role in the team and pick a champion most suited for it. Every champion has a different build and a unique style to complement it.

The five most well-known roles in League of Legends are AD (Attack Damage) Carry, Support, Top Laners, Mid Laners and Junglers. Each of the aforementioned roles has its own responsibilities.

The AD Carry is supposed to collect gold and purchase items to attack the opposite team.

The Support, as the name suggests, supports the AD Carry throughout the duration of the game. The AD Carry and Support play the game in the bottom lane.

The Top Laners remain in the top lane and are supposed to clear the area. Likewise, the Mid Laners are ‌in the mid lane and are the key players here.

The Junglers remain in the area between the lanes, also known as Jungles. The Junglers remain in the shadows and surprise their opponents.

Hence, after knowing each of the roles in the game, the players must find their favourite role and choose the most suitable champion with the best build and style for their role.
