Has the umpiring and DRS been the worst in the 2022 edition
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 has raised controversy regarding its questionable umpiring. There have been many instances where players or fans have appealed against the umpires in the current edition of IPL
This is due to the players' exposure to significant umpiring errors. It is said that the ongoing season has witnessed the worst phase when it comes to its umpiring. Here is a list of a few scenarios that have caused fans to criticise the technical experts on the crease!
Hazlewood got away with a wide ball (RCB vs LSG)
One such incident occurred during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) match, which invited heavy backlash from the cricketing world. Former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth also expressed his views and slammed the "pathetic" umpiring observed in the current edition. In the match, RCB pacer Josh Hazlewood got away with a wide ball, which elicited an angry reaction from LSG batter Marcus Stoinis and he got bowled in the very next ball.
Srikkanth took to his official Twitter handle and said such small bad decisions significantly impact the games. Stoinis' dismissal earned Hazlewood the fourth wicket of the match as LSG were reduced to 148/7. RCB won the game by 18 runs, which is primarily attributed to the economical over by Hazlewood marked by the umpiring error.
Errors involving Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane (KKR vs DC)
During the match between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) match on April 10, KKR opener Ajinkya Rahane was declared out wrongly in the first two balls of the game and didn't have to walk away; thanks to DRS. In another instance, Virat Kohli was wrongly declared out with an LBW clam, even after the third umpire review.
Umpire signalled wide and changed his decision later (CSK vs MI)
As Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in the 59th match of IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium, there was a moment in the sixth over of the second innings which invited a lot of criticism from fans. The on-field umpire gave out Shokeen as MS Dhoni took a brilliant catch. However, the umpire was about to signal wide and, at the very last moment, decided to change the decision in favour of CSK. Some fans slammed the poor on-field umpiring, while others thought Dhoni had bullied the umpire.
Rohit Sharma wrongly ruled out (MI vs KKR)
Mumbai Indians tackled the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2022 on May 09. Rohit Sharma was dismissed at the last ball of the first over of MI's innings. The ball had hit Rohit's thigh pad before KKR wicket-keeper Sheldon Jackon took the catch and claimed to the umpire, convinced that the batter had edged the ball to change his "not-out" verdict. There was an apparent technical glitch in the ultra edge as the spikes were witnessed in the replay even before the ball passed close to the bat. Still, the third umpire didn't hesitate before ruling Rohit out of the innings.
