Which team has conceded the most extras in an inning in the history of IPL?
The Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) has returned to India after a one-and-a-half-year hiatus. Matches this season have been full of suspense like every other year, and many of them have been lost by the team because of unnecessary runs given by bowlers due to wides and no balls.
The Indian Premier League teaches us the importance of every run as the loss margins are generally very small.
The extras are always very detrimental to the bowling team as cricket is a game where a single run can decide the outcome. Every run count, and so ‘extras’ hurt. Byes, Leg-Byes, Wides, No-Balls, and, very infrequently, Penalty Runs are all ways to score runs.
Few extras are common in every match, but in some matches, teams concede extras at a rate that is unbelievable to think of. Here is a list of five teams who have conceded the most runs in an innings in the history of the Indian Premier League.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders (28 extras, IPL 2008)
Deccan Chargers were limited to 110 runs in the fourth match of the IPL 2008 after electing to bat first. The credit for DC crossing the 100-run mark, on the other hand, belongs to the KKR bowlers. A total of 28 extras were given away by Ashok Dinda, Ishant Sharma, Ajit Agarkar, Murali Kartik, Mohammad Hafeez, and David Hussey – 4 byes, eight leg-byes, 15 wides, and a no-ball. KKR, on the other hand, went on to win the match by five wickets with an over to spare, not allowing the extra runs to derail their hopes.
4. Punjab Kings (27 extras, IPL 2011)
Although the Punjab Kings are one of the most inconstant teams in the tournament, they have a history of pulling off upsets. After electing to bat first in the 63rd match of the IPL 2011, Kings XI Punjab scored 232/2 in 20 overs. Shaun Marsh struck an unbroken 79 runs off 49 balls, while Adam Gilchrist smacked a century. Punjab managed to win the match by 111 runs despite giving out seven byes, 14 leg-byes, four wides, and two no-balls while defending a massive total.
3. Rajasthan Royals (26 extras, IPL 2008)
In the 39th match of the IPL 2008, the inaugural champion Rajasthan Royals allowed 26 extras to Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB chose to bat first and had a 198-run target to meet in order to win the match. Despite one bye, six leg-byes, one no-ball, and 18 wides, KKR were unable to close off the game and were lost by 65 runs.
2. Chennai Super Kings (26 extras, IPL 2009)
Chennai Super Kings, the four-time IPL champions, allowed 26 extras in the 47th match of the 2009 IPL against Mumbai Indians. CSK bowled first after losing the toss and giving out 16 leg-byes and ten wides in the first innings, as MI reached 147/5. CSK, on the other hand, did not have to suffer too much and won the match by seven wickets.
1. Kolkata Knight Riders (26 extras, IPL 2015)
The Knight Riders have made it in this list two times as the two-time winners KKR allowed 26 extras in the 54th match of the IPL 2015 between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders - 3 leg-byes, 18 wides, and five no-balls. After winning the toss, the Rajasthan Royals scored 199/6 and went on to win the match by nine runs. KKR bowled 18 wides, which was more than double the difference between the two teams.
