West Indies vs England: West Indies seal the three-match series by 1-0 to retain The Richards-Botham trophy
West Indies won the series in style and retained the Richards-Botham trophy. After two hard-fought draws came to a momentous win in the decisive third test by 10 wickets, Grenada finally gave what Antigua and Barbados failed to give: A result.
Earlier two matches ended in a dull draw owing to slow and low wickets; however, Grenada offered an interesting surface to play on. A clinical performance displayed by Captain Kraigg Brathwaite led West Indies in all the departments.
Struggling England
England looked to struggle in both the innings of the third test as their top and middle-order batters could barely contribute to anything for the scoreboard. The partnership between Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood on Day 1 added a little hope for England to drag the match to the fourth day; else, it would have ended a lot earlier in favour of hosts. Even the Caribbeans struggled on the second day. Joshua da Silva's maiden 100 and the lower order partnership fetched them a valuable 93-run lead in the first innings.
Following the little lead of 10 runs that England could make by the end of Day 3, the tail-enders could not capitalise much on their innings this time. England got bundled up for 120 runs leaving them with a lead of just 28 runs. England gave a target of just 28 runs to the hosts to seal the series win. Credit goes to Kyle Mayers, who single-handedly destroyed the English batting line-up by taking an economical five-wicket haul. He had astonishing figures of 5/18 in 17 overs in the second inning.
An easy win for the hosts
A target of mere 28 runs took near to no effort from West Indies batters. The target was chased down without any hassle in the first session of Day 4 to seal the series by 1-0 as captain Kraigg Brathwaite played the winning shot.
After the team's loss, Joe Root said, "It has been a frustrating Test match; we showed a lot of fire in the first innings. Yesterday was a very frustrating day, but we didn't manage it well like we did in the first two games. We took a few strides forward in the first two games, but credit to the West Indies for this match. We didn't read the surface as well as we could. There's still a lot of learning that needs to be done; we need to keep working hard. The most important thing is to make improvements moving forward. Jack Leach has been exceptional. Lawrence showed a lot of promise, which is very exciting. I think we have learned a lot as a group, the most important thing is to keep that attitude. I think I made it clear that I am passionate about this team, that has not changed. We are so lucky to get the support that we do"
West Indies have shown a lot of improvement in all the departments while playing, even at homeland. They displayed resilient character in such longer formats. Kraigg Brathwaite led the team in a very balanced manner. They must be pleased to win the series, where it felt that it might end up in a dull draw. Joshua Da Silva became the Player of the Match for his maiden century. In contrast, captain Kraigg Brathwaite was entitled the Player of the Series for his commendable contribution with the bat. Meanwhile, England's jinx of not winning a Test series in the Caribbean continues - now they have not won there since 2004/05.
