The 99 club of Indian Premier League
Smashing a century is probably each player's dream, and the satisfaction after hitting the 100 runs mark is indefinable. However, imagine getting so close to this mark but not scoring a century
Playing on 99 is indeed the most challenging stage for any batter. Whether a youngster or an experienced player, it is always an uphill task for anyone to hold his nerves at the stage. While most batters cross the mark, some players lose their wicket at 99. Let's take a look at the batters who have been dismissed at 99 in the history of IPL.
RUTURAJ GAIKWAD (vs SRH 2022)
Ruturaj Gaikwad was in sensational form against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 46th match of the league this season and looked set for his second IPL century. He was fluent with his bat, and his century seemed quite sure as no bowler could get rid of him. However, Gaikwad's slight mistake dismissed his hopes for his season's first century. Gaikwad tried to cut T Natarajan in the 18th over but couldn't keep it down and was caught at a backward point. Ruturaj had an unfortunate dismissal scoring 99 runs off 57 deliveries with the help of 6 sixes and six fours. The batter has scored one century and nine half-centuries earlier in his IPL career. He was struggling with his form this season; however, his knock in the previous match can potentially bring him on the right track.
CHRIS GAYLE (vs RR 2020)
The Universe Boss holds the record for smashing the most number of centuries in the history of IPL. However, Gayle has also seen an unfortunate dismissal at 99 once. This happened during the match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals in 2020. Gayle came in at number three in the second over to anchor the innings with skipper KL Rahul. The two made a massive partnership of 120 runs, but KL departed soon with his brilliant knock. However, there seemed to be no stopping for Gayle, and he continued with his destruction with the bat. The Universe Boss was ultimately dismissed at 99 off 63 balls. He smashed six fours and eight sixes before having his stumps rattled by Jofra Archer. Chris Gayle, till now, has scored six centuries and 31 half-centuries in the league and tops the record for the highest individual score of 175 in the history of IPL.
ISHAN KISHAN (vs RCB 2020)
Mumbai Indians' star wicketkeeper-batsman and the most valuable player of the 2022 mega auction, Ishan Kishan, looked set to become the third player to hit a century of the 2020 season in the match against RCB. Kishan played brilliantly in the game and was well settled. There seemed no stopping for the wicketkeeper-batsman and his first-ever IPL century seemed inevitable. In the last over, when Kishan was on 99, he chose to complete the three figured mark with a big hit; however, he was caught at midwicket to hit the ball over the rope. It was unfortunate for him to not get to his first IPL century ever after getting so close. With this regrettable dismissal, Kishan became the third player of the league to get out on 99. Despite a brilliant performance every year, Ishan Kishan has yet to score his maiden century.
Prithvi Shaw (vs KKR 2019)
Prithvi Shaw recorded his name to the list in the match between DC and KKR in 2019. With 186 to chase, the Delhi Capitals opener was set to get the team over the line in the final along with his century. Shaw had reached 99 off 54 balls with the help of 12 fours and three sixes. He just needed one run to complete his maiden century. However, destiny had some other decision for Shaw, and he was caught behind by the keeper and had to return to the pavilion one short of his ton. Prithvi has yet to score his maiden century; however, he has 12 fifties in the league till now.
VIRAT KOHLI (vs DC 2013)
Royal Challengers Banglore star batter Virat Kohli was the first-ever cricketer to be dismissed on 99 in the IPL. During a match between RCB and DC in 2013, Virat was dismissed at 99, the first-ever dismissal on 99 in IPL. Kohli was well settled on the crease, and his century seemed quite sure. However, in a rush to take a double, Kohli fell short of the crease and was run out on 99. This unfortunate dismissal was entirely unexpected for the batter and the fans. Kohli has played 177 matches in 12 seasons so far. Being the highest run-scorer in the league, he has five centuries to his name in IPL.
