Teams and Players to win Maximum Purple Caps in IPL
Winning the Purple Cap award is the ultimate target and dream of every IPL bowler
The bowler with the most wickets in the ongoing matches wears the Purple Cap while fielding. The overall leading wicket-taker after the tournament won the actual Purple Cap award in the last match of the tournament. In case of a tie ( with equal wicket ) the bowler with a superior economy rate would hold the Purple Cap.
So far, there have been 12 different purple cap winners, with Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo winning the award twice. However, let us look at some of these teams and players who clinched the valuable purple cap honor several times. Pakistan's pace bowler Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to win the Purple Cap. Sohail Tanvir took 22 wickets in 11 matches in the inaugural edition of the cash-rich league. RCB's prime bowler Harshal Patel won the purple cap for taking the most wickets last season. He took 32 wickets in 19 matches, conceding 459 runs in overs with an economy of 8.34.
Players to Win Maximum Purple Cap Awards
It is a tough challenge for any bowler to claim this valuable purple cap award. Very few bowlers earn this feat and are the season's best bowlers. While it is rare for any bowler to achieve this award, two bowlers have won this award twice, most by any other bowler in the league.
Chennai Super Kings' star medium-pacer
Dwayne Bravo and Sunrisers Hyderabad's prime pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the only bowlers to have won the Purple Cap on two different occasions. Bravo won the purple cap in the years 2013 and 2015. The West Indies all-rounder picked 32 wickets to win his first Purple Cap of IPL. His bowling figures in 2013 remain the best for any bowler in a single season. In 2015, Bravo won the purple cap again and became the first player to win the Purple Cap twice after he scalped 26 wickets in 17 games to take his team to the final.
Playing for Hyderabad in 2016, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar's known for his perfect line and length picked 23 wickets in 17 games at an economy of 7.42 to win the Purple Cap that year. Next season, Hyderabad failed to defend their title but Bhuvaneshwar Kumar again topped the wicket-taking chart, becoming only the second player to win two Purple Caps. He picked 26 wickets in just 14 games.
Team to win maximum Purple cap award
If we look at the team to win the maximum number of purple cap awards, it is none other than MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings. The franchise has won more purple caps than any other team in the league. CSK, considered one of the most successful franchises in IPL, has won the purple cap award several four times. Won those in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018. Out of these four times, DJ Bravo himself won the award twice in 2013 and 2015, while Mohit Sharma (2014) and Imran Tahir (2018) won it once each for the franchise. Also, CSK is the only franchise to win the award in three consecutive years in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
