T20 World Cup: ICC begins 100-Day countdown to T20 World Cup with Trophy tour
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy will tour four continents before arriving back in Geelong on October 16, when the competition begins
The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCGrevered )’s turf was brought into the city center on Friday to kick off the 100-day countdown to the ICC T20 World Cup. A number of cricketing greats, including Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Waqar Younis, and Morne Morkel, were present to launch the "World Cup Trophy Tour."
The competition will include the top men's cricket players from 16 different nations, with Finch's Australian team, determined to retain the championship they won in the UAE last year. The men's tournament is being held in Australia for the first time, and the women's version will follow in 2020.
The time between now and the commencement of the mega-event, according to Finch, will be essential to his team's prospects of retaining the title. "It's an exciting time for cricket with so many world-class teams coming out to play all around the country. Now that there are just 100 days to go, you can feel the excitement building among the team about the prospect of playing in a home World Cup in front of our fans," ICC cited the Australia white-ball captain's statement.
"In a World Cup, every game is tough, and anyone can beat anyone on their day so the white-ball cricket we've got coming up over the next couple of months is going to be crucial to make sure we are ready to come to the first ball of the World Cup in October," added Aaron Finch.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice Comments
"Celebrating the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan, is another important milestone in taking the trophy to 10 countries for the first time ever, once again showing our commitment to using the T20 format as a vehicle to grow the game and to engage new fans across the world”.
The trophy will go to 35 locations across 13 nations and four continents throughout its tour. For the first time, the T20 World Cup trophy will visit Fiji, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Namibia, Nepal, Singapore, and Vanuatu, bringing the sport to more people in various nations.
