T20 World Cup 2022: Why were Andre Russell and Sunil Narine not selected?
Russell and Narine are both absolute game changers; thus, their absence from the squad raised some eyebrows
The West Indies has selected its roster for the T20 World Cup in Australia, and two huge names were left out: Andre Russell and Sunil Narine.
Russell and Narine are both undisputed all-stars in the league; therefore, it was unclear why they weren't selected for the team. Desmond Haynes, Chief Selector of the West Indies, has a valid explanation for the same.
Haynes stated that they did not go with Russell since he was not performing well and opted to move on and search for someone who was performing better in the format.
Haynes was evident that Narine was uninterested in playing for the West Indies.
Desmond Haynes, CWI's Lead Selector, stated, "We have chosen a blend of youth and experience to represent the West Indies." We were aware of the ongoing CPL during the selection process and looked at the guys performing exceptionally well.
At the start of my term, I stated that I would like to give players opportunities, and I believe I have been consistent in doing so. I feel we have chosen an excellent team, one that will contend, considering that we must qualify from Round 1 into the Super12s."
"There are players who did not make the team, and I hope they will continue to work hard and perform to the best of their abilities in the CPL and the upcoming CG United Super50 Cup; because you never know what can happen in case of injuries or other unforeseen situations where we might need to call up players as replacements," Haynes added.
West Indies T20 World Cup Squad:
