T20 World Cup 2022: The records of the "sixes" in the T20 format
Sixes are the most dangerous weapon in T20I. One six has an effect at two places. First, it skyrockets the scoring run rate, and second, it destroys the economy of the given bowler. On one side, it brings energy and excitement; on the other, it's frustration
With one of the best T20I seasons ongoing, sixes are flying in the stadium now and then, breaking or creating new records.
Rohit Sharma broke the record to pass Martin Guptill
Recently, in the second T20I match between India and Australia, Hitman Rohit Sharma became the batter with the most sixes in the T20Is passing New Zealand's Martin Guptill.
In the eight-over match, Rohit Sharma fired four sixes with great timings while chasing a target of 91. After the match, he had 176 T20I sixes in 138 games. Right behind him, Martin Guptill has 172 sixes.
The universe boss, Chris Gayle, who has retired from international Cricket now, stands third on the tally with 124 sixes in just 79 matches.
In 2022, while Rohit Sharma has hit 26 sixes, Suryakumar Yadav has hit the most number of sixes for India - 37 in international T20s.
Few players who won't be happy with sixes
While batters indeed enjoy hitting sixes, bowlers hate getting hit for one. But the very nature of T20I has taken the immunity from every bowler in terms of getting hit for a six.
One-six and all hard work in the over is lost, pressure is gone, and your economy shoots. That's how bad it is to get hit for a six.
With Rohit Sharma getting a reason to celebrate, Harshal Patel will be under tremendous pressure because of sixes after the match.
This year, India saw a great variety in its bowling department. With the addition of debutants like Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and the return of Hardik Pandya. But this factor of getting hit for sixes speaks a lot about their contribution and concerns.
So far in 2022, Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal have been hit for 20 sixes, while Avesh Khan has been hit 21 times for six. But the most worrying part for team India is their new responsible bowling option, Harshal Patel.
He has been hammered 31 times for a six in 17 T20I matches.
Sanjay Manjrekar said, "Harshal is a worry if the pitch is flat, bouncy, and pacy. That's what you'll get in Australia. So that's another thing that India will be mindful of, the skills of Harshal in Australia."
The biggest festival awaits the most significant test.
Twenty-one days to go for the biggest T20I cricket tournament the whole world is waiting for. The 2021 edition of the T20I World Cup saw 405 sixes. But this year, with big hitters like Liam Livingstone, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammad Rizwan, Jos Buttler, Rohit Sharma, and many more, this counter will be going to new heights.
