M S Dhoni and Virat Kohli: Only Captains to score 6000+ runs in T20
If we think about some of the best captains the Indian team has ever seen, the two names that will surely strike our brains are MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
The two are the absolute icons of the game. With their performances till now, they have always been stunning us. The two captains raised the level of Indian cricket during their tenure. They have multiple records under their belt portraying their mastery in the game of cricket. Out of these numerous records the two hold, there is an achievement that only these two have in international cricket. Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are the only two captains to complete the 6000 runs mark in T20.
The former Indian captain Virat Kohli became the first to score 6000 runs in T20 cricket. He achieved this feat in 2021, playing for RCB. In 326 T20 matches, the batsman currently has 10,273 runs, the most by an Indian in T20s. Virat has an average of 41.09 in the short format with a strike rate of 133.2, which is quite impressive considering the number of matches he has played. Whereas in the IPL, Virat has scored 6499 runs in 211 innings with an average of 36.31 since his first season. During his match against MI in 2021, he crossed a significant landmark – 6000 runs as a captain in the T20s. Virat Kohli has achieved this feat in his 168th inning. Kohli has been the captain of RCB since 2013, and although he hasn't been able to lead the side to a title, he has been their most consistent run-getter. The same goes with the Indian national team, as the batter proves that he is one of the most incredible batters ever played the game.
In the fifteenth edition of the IPL this season, when CSK clashed against DC in the 55th match, the skipper MS Dhoni scored just unbeaten 21 runs off eight balls. However, these runs were enough for him to join the elite list and Virat Kohli. MS Dhoni became the second captain to score 6000 runs in T20 cricket. Overall, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni has scored over 7000 runs in T20 cricket at an average of 35+ and a strike rate of 130+. Also, he has smashed 28 half-centuries in the shorter format of the game. In his IPL career, MS Dhoni has scored 4909 in his 203 innings at an average of 32.2 and a strike rate of 135.95. Also, Dhoni needs 91 runs to enter the 5000 runs club to join Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Suresh Raina, and AB de Villiers on the particular list. The skipper has led his franchise to the title four times, due to which CSK is one of the most successful teams in the league. MS Dhoni seems to be aging like fine wine as he continues to write his name in the record books at the age of 40.
When comparing Kohli and Dhoni's brilliant achievements in this club, King Kohli had done it in his 168th inning, whereas Dhoni's 6000 runs came in his 187th inning. At the same time, Rohit Sharma has scored 4764 runs in T20 cricket as a captain, and he is third after these two. The three are the icon of Indian cricket, and they have always proved it. While MS Dhoni has now retired from international cricket, his bat is still shining in IPL, whereas Virat and Rohit- both are still representing the blue jersey.
