Super Overs of IPL years 2020 and 2021
Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has brought its supporters delight and excitement, and when the match is down to the final ball, the excitement skyrockets. The spectators love the games the best when both sides have the exact total, and a Super Over decides the game.
Here, we will discuss all such nail-biting matches in the previous 2 IPL seasons.
DC vs PBKS (2020, DC won)
The Punjab Kings were struggling to score. Delhi Capitals scored a fighting total of 157 for 8 in 20 overs. In reply, PBKS were staring down the barrel with half of their team back in the pavilion until Mayank Agarwal’s 89 off 60 balls lifted them to 157 before Stoinis struck twice in the final two balls to force a Super Over.
Both teams finished on 157 for eight. The game went to a Super Over, and Kagiso Rabada ruled the super over. He gave only two runs and claimed two wickets off consecutive deliveries to help Delhi Capitals win.
Mohammed Shami, who was in incredible form, was given the responsibility to defend two runs for Punjab Kings. Eventually, he failed to do as it’s almost impossible to defend such a small total.
RCB vs MI (2020, RCB won)
The Virat Kohli led side scored 201 runs in 20 overs because the opener Devdutt Padikkal gave them the start they needed, and a marvellous inning by South African legend Ab De Villiers helped them reach over the rope.
After exceptional hitting by Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard for Mumbai Indians the game finished in a tie, In the second of the edition, Mumbai Indians reached 201/5 with Pollard’s last-ball four, despite an early wobble.
Both Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya struggled against Navdeep Saini as they scored only seven runs in Super Over. With Virat Kohli striking Jasprit Bumrah for a four on the penultimate ball of the Super Over, Royal Challengers Banglore reached the goal.
SRH Vs KKR (2020, SRH won)
The Kolkata Knight Riders scored 163 runs in 20 overs, aided by small contributions from the entire top order. Shubman Gill top-scored with 36 off 37 balls, while everyone in the middle order contributed valuable runs for the team.
The Sunrise Hyderbad appeared to be in cruise gear, and they seemed to be on track to chase the total comfortably. Then Lockie Ferguson entered the fray and quickly dispatched the Orange Army’s batting lineup, taking three quick wickets. David Warner saved Sunrisers as he helped them get to the exact score of 163, leading to a super over.
The domination of Lockie Ferguson continued in the super over as he dismissed the most dangerous batsman David Warner in the first ball and restricted them to a mere total of 2 runs making the chase a piece of cake for Kolkata Knight Riders.
MI vs PBKS (2020, PBKS won)
One of the best super over in the history of IPL as the match witnessed not one super over but 2 of them!
Quinton de Kock had led the way with the bat for Mumbai Indians, scoring a half-century, while Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, and Nathan Coulter-Nile played vital cameos, helping them reach a decent total of 176 runs.
In reply, Punjab Kings scored 176 runs too. With a knock of 77 in 51 balls, skipper KL Rahul led a spectacular chase for the Punjab-based team.
Indian pace batteries Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami bowled in the first super over. At the same time, Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock batted for MI, and Rahul and Nicolas Pooran batted for Punjab. Both teams scored five runs, but MI was denied victory on the last ball of the over, leading to another super over.
Both teams had to modify their batting and bowling orders because the same players could not take the field in the second Super Over. Trent Boult and Chris Jordan were given the reins for their respective teams. Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard came out to bat for the Mumbai-based franchise and scored 11 runs. On the other hand, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal ensured PBKS’ two points by finishing the chase in two balls.
SRH vs DC (2021, DC won)
In the inaugural super over match of IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad on the last ball of the Super Over. In their 20 overs, both sides scored 159 runs thanks to a valuable knock by Jonny Bairstow in the second innings of the game.
In the Super Over, SRH batted first and scored seven runs off Axar Patel. DC scored 8 in their Super Over, which Rashid Khan bowled.
The game results would have been different if David Warner had shown the presence of mind and not done a short run. Because of his carelessness, the franchise scored only seven runs (which could have been 8), and the game would have gone for a second super over.
