Squad for South Africa tour: Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik are in T20 thanks to IPL performance
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named squads for a home T20I series against South Africa, with Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh receiving their first India call-ups
In India's forthcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, KL Rahul has been selected captain, with Rishabh Pant as his vice-captain. The games will be in Delhi, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, and Bengaluru, among other cities.
After a remarkable season in the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad's 22-year-old pacer, Umran Malik, would get picked when he consistently registered speeds well above 150kmph, with a top of 157kmph, and picked up 21 wickets from 13 games, including a five-wicket haul. While Malik's economy rate was above ten runs per over in certain games, his ability to take wickets in the middle overs and his incredible pace made him a near-certainty.
Umran Malik of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has had a great season, taking 21 wickets in 13 games. Umran in Jammu and Kashmir has consistently clocked 150 kilometres per hour. While he has been a little pricey, he has always delivered, including a fantastic five-wicket performance against the Gujarat Titans (GT).
T.Natarajan, who had tested positive for COVID-19, was replaced by Umran in SRH in 2021. The Orange Army, captain Kane Williamson and Abdul Samad, later retained the seamer ahead of the IPL big auction in 2022.
This season, Singh was also recognized for his consistency when he was named the most economical seam bowler in the competition, ahead of even Jasprit Bumrah, with an economy rate of 7.31 in over 16 to 20.
While he does not have a lot of wickets, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) medium bowler is noted for his economical stints. In 13 games, he has ten doors at an economy of 7.71. As SRH and PBKS play their final match of IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium, both Malik and Arshdeep are in action.
Arshdeep, who competed in the 2018 U19 World Cup in New Zealand, only appeared in two games because Prithvi Shaw and his teammates favoured the fast bowling trio of Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, and Ishan Porel.
The BCCI has also confirmed India's 17-man Test squad for the rescheduled fifth Test against England, which will take place from July 1 to 5 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Test series is now 2-1 in India's favour.
India's T20I squad: KL Rahul (c), Rishabh Pant (VC)(wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Kuldeep Yadav.
