Shreyas Iyer returns as Kolkata Knight Riders captain
Batsman Shreyas Iyer has returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders captaincy for the 2024 Indian Premier League.
Iyer missed the 2023 IPL due to a back injury. All-rounder Nitish Rana, who captained KKR in Iyer's absence last year, has been moved to vice-captain.
"I believe the last season presented us with several challenges, including my absence due to injury," said Iyer.
"Nitish did a great job not only filling in for me but also with his commendable leadership. I am delighted that KKR has named him vice captain. No doubt it will strengthen the leadership group."
Kolkata have released several players ahead of next week's player auction, including New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and Indian duo Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav.
"It was indeed unfortunate that Shreyas missed IPL 2023 due to injury. We are delighted that he's back and at the helm as captain," added KKR chief executive officer Venky Mysore.
"The way he has worked hard to recover from his injury and the form he has displayed is a testament to his character.
"We are also grateful that Nitish had agreed to step into Shreyas' shoes last season and did a great job. There's no doubt Nitish as vice-captain will support Shreyas in every possible way."
Kolkata won the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. The Chennai Super Kings are the reigning champions. Chennai and the Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in the history of the tournament with five titles each.
